Bass-ic
Hi. Is there a particular book which deals with all aspects of bass making that is considered the best source of information? Cheers matt
Dom in Dorset
Make your own electric guitar by Melvyn Hiscock. It's on amazon, great book. Edited February 1, 2010 by Dom in Somerset
Bass-ic
Hi Many thanks for that. Does if cover basses as well as guitars? It wasnt very clear in the write up if it does both. cheers Matt
Dom in Dorset
It's about 50/50, he concentrates on aspects of design, pitfalls etc. appart from size and number of strings a bass isn't that different to a guitar, most of the build techniques are the same. Bass-ic
Ok, thanks very much for that. Is this the only book on the subject?
retroman
Or, alternatively, if you are feeling semi wealthy, and live near Derbyshire, you could always book yourself on one of Jon Shuker's one week courses, where you get to build, and keep your own bass
Bass-ic
Ha! I have very much been looking into doing the course!
Dom in Dorset
There are loads of books on building electric guitars, that's the only one that I have. I chose it because it had a foreword by Brain May! I can recomend this place for buying components: http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/CH-GUITARS__W0QQ_armrsZ1 I have no financial interests here, I've bought two necks from them, I'll be back for bridges, machines etc.
Vibrating G String
Melvyns book is great, some of the other books out there are not so good. Also download the catalog from Luthiers Mercantile, it has a lot of good info in it. http://www.lmii.com/CartTwo/CATALOG.asp Gluing and Clamping from Patrick Speilman is pretty good also though it's just on gluing and clamping. neepheid
I have read Martin Koch's book "Building Electric Guitars" and found it to be quite good - a sample pdf is here: http://www.buildyourguitar.com/books/beg/b112_115.pdf You can get it from http://www.buildyourguitar.com/books/books.php, either physically or in e-book.
