Examples of the jazz bass "Growl"

Assuming that you're all talking about the same thing...its a product of a specific band of frequencies being more prominent than others. The instrument alone isn't enough to get it in my experience, it also depends on how well the amp and speakers pass on that same set of frequencies. Those frequencies are typically boosted to a point on the verge of being overdriven and the overdrive is what gives the growl, preferably through the speakers more than the amp though. GK have a boost feature on their amps that is pretty much the same thing although I don't think their cabs contribute as much to the sound as they could.

My old man has an original 60's Jazz Bass, which I love. I tried to take it home with me the last time I was there, claiming early inheritance and he growled.

Is this what's mean by jazz bass "growl"?

That's not strickly true, I dinked my doggie's head with my Jazz when I was putting it on it's stand (the bass, not the dog ) and the little bugger bit me on the ankle ( the dog, not the bass)

I always considered that type of sound to eminate from the pick-ups being 'too' close to the strings and the circuits therefore running a little hot or the amp master volume vs. input vol. being set back to front (distortion). I never considered it to be peculiar to a Fender Jazz. I can get it on my Wal without any difficulty.

Especially if the battery is running low

Never mind growl, thats some of the coolest slap playing I've ever heard, and a fabulous warm rich tone, probably both pickups maxed, and not too much treble (at least from the you tube vid)

This makes me laugh! How do you compare a burp to a growl? A clank to a ....

The Daryl Jones clip is great, and his sound is cool - but I would never describe that as a "growl". Much too smooth. To me, the "Jazz growl" (if there is such a thing) is typified by Geddy Lee's sound. But is that more "zingy" I wonder? A "nasal snort" even?

Whatever a growl actually is, I'm damned sure that my Status doesn't have it!!

It just shows how subjective sound is - in hearing it and in describing it!!

I've always thought that the bass player from the Killers gets quite a growly tone from his jazz. I think Geddy too has a growly tone. That's how I hear it anyway. Surely clank is Rickenbacker ??

I'd always understood the 'Jazz Growl' to be what happens when you have both pickups full-on - because the pickups are out of phase this results in a mid-range scoop.

Of course! But then how would you compare the sounds of different basses? You have to admit that a P sounds different to a J, and to a Rickenbacker, and a Jaydee, a Status.... etc. If it weren't for subjective words like "Growl" how would we compare tones?
