She looks way better built than my '09 bird :) Loving the Maple Glo beauty in the back ground too! :brow:

In fact we have the same taste in basses.....'Bird, Ricky, Jazz, Stingray
Yeah it's playing well, I need to get the action rasied a smidge but aprt from that I'm lovin' it. Looking forward to giving it a gig debut on Sunday!!

I'm happy with my lot I suppose (there's a 2 tone sunburst P at the back). As per my other post that's me for a while..............we'll see!
The only pic I can find at the moment of my SGZ but I will try and take some more.
It's sounding better than ever strung with flats at the moment.

Not seen many of these about so I assume it's quite rare.

That's tasty!

Here's my first bass: a Gibson EB-4L

I bought it when I was 17, in 1977 (there you go, cat out of the bag) and I still have it.

It's a bit neck heavy and the action is too high for me and the sound is very early 70's (thuddy and wooly) so I don't play it now but I can't bear to part with it: too much emotion invested in it.

These are Gibson images, my photo's of it are a way away at the moment (I should take some more) but it's identical to this except I don't have the bridge cover.

Mine was made in 1973 I think, it sat in a shop for a year or two and then was bought by a guy in Montreal where I lived as a teenager. He sold it to me a year or so later for not much because he wanted some skis :)
That's a nice tale. I can understand why you would never want to part with her

Perhaps she just needs a truss rod tweak?? My EB2 has a medium/high action, but both my Thunderbirds have a really low action :)
Truss rod has been tweaked as much as possible by pro guitar guy but the neck seems very bendy and is never quite flat. The problem with the bridge design is it is fixed in place on only two mounting posts (go figure) not four which would hold it flat against the body. As a result it tips forward slightly which lifts up the strings.

To be honest it's a daft bridge design and the sensible thing to do is to replace it with something that works properly but if I did that it would no longer be original, so I've just left it as it is.

It was my only bass for 23 years up until I bought my Stingray 4 when I was 40 - and then the Stingray just blew it away. Sad, but true.

Hipshot do a direct replacement for both the 2 and 3 point bridges. No modifications required :)

My EB2 has the old fashioned 2 point mounting bridge, and the only way of adjusting the intonation is via two grub screws that work against the back of the two posts :) Took ages to get it adjusted, and it's as near as I could ever hope to get it. IMHO, trying to get a low action on the short scale EB2 is pointless anyway, as they are only really any good at root note stuff. Getting up the dusty end of the board makes for some interesting, boomy sounds!

I find the 3 point bridges far better. The one thing I have found with them is they don't like strings that have the silks at the ball end of the string. Always seem to wind up with the silk on the saddle of the E string, making getting the string heights difficult, as the saddle for the E always seems to wind up towards the very rear of the bridge. So far I have always managed to get a low action, and really good intonation with the 3 point bridge.

I've seen those Hipshot bridges, and they look good. Fine for a gigging bass, but don't they clamp down onto the body, and leave a "footprint" in the finish? That's the one thing that put me off

Yeah, they do leave a little depression, I had one on my Epi EB-3 and when I took it off you could see the faintest of lines in the light. That's a modern poly finish I reckon, so it might be worse for nitro. Having said that, if you're never going to sell it, then there's no harm in it I guess. Plus the fact that you'd be hard pressed to see it past the original bridge if you were to change back. If it turns a reluctant heirloom into a much more usable, friendly instrument, I'd say it was worth it.

But what a FANTASTIC bass, tone, volume, playability...blimey...this was a brilliant purchase had loads of +ve feedback. I'll post a pic of some rock and roll bass faces when I get some decent pics of the bass.

Happy days.......!

Ones that got away......

Very early EB3 (1961?) - the neck pickup cover is 'chromed' black plastic. Sold the bass a while ago to an 'agent' who has since told me it now belongs to Angus Young.

If USA Epiphones qualify as Gibsons in theory, here's the ultra rare Embassy De Luxe - basically a T-bird with a more conventional body. Why the hell did I sell that?
That's one fantatsic looking piece of kit....many congrats......!
Cheers F61  Glad to hear that you're impressed with yours. My 09 Bird has a huge tone, and a super fast neck, and the neck dive really isn't the problem that a lot of people would have you believe  Look forward to seeing the pictures.

The '76 got it's first outing at band practice the other night. What a tone monster! Very different to play to the newer ones though. The neck is a little wider, and the headstock is HUGE!! I don't know that I can resist using her at a couple of gigs actually........ :) Mainly to hear her through my SVT rig! I use an ancient Carlsboro rig for practice, that I leave there

That's a lot of bass to be carting off to a gig, not sure I'd be playing something of that worth at the venues I play tbh, still pleased that your impressed with it!
