SS73 Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Thanks guys, I bought it in the US a few years ago, I don't think it had ever been played and at that only ever with flats, I did have a few issues with the pot's which I will write a thread soon about. Very easy player but not Fender low action, I think these and the EB2's are just not meant to have a low action. Quote

Anybody got an Explorer, really Gassing one, I remember seeing MSG and they played ''Into The Arena'' wow SVT/Explorer OMG Quote

My EB2 at best has a medium/high action that I just put down to the short scale length. The Ebay 'Bird looks well looked after. It is very easy to wear through the finish like that. My 09 had the finish wear through first time I used it with a strap Really nice padded strap as well Interesting that the seller mentioned the balance "issue". My 09 is no problem at all. I can let go of it, and it stays put. The '76 is definately a lot more headstock heavy. Perhaps it's the original 'Birds that got the bad reputation for neck dive, and now people just assume that if it's a Thunderbird, it's gonna neck dive? +1 to the fly guitars site as well Quote

SS73 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Yes I saw that one. Just looked at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_PQ0eBb83c...feature=related and found that Chris Glen has a P bass pup inbetween the gibson pups, still sounds amazing though. Shaggy Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Glad to see some Gibson love going on here; after many years of whoring around with any old bass they're the marque I've finally come around to, in particular the "reverse" models for the reasons given here; http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=74502&st=0 Here's my Kalamazoo Kuties : Quote
Shaggy Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 ........'65 Thunderbird IV, usual neck repair and oversprayed. Just the best playing and sounding bass I've ever owned. Quote
Shaggy Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 ......'77 RD Artist. Huge heavy bar-room brawler of a bass Quote
Shaggy Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 (edited) ........'85 Explorer: yes it's the most radical, the most flawed, but actually a simple, robust and honest bass that's very nearly as ergonomic to play as the T'bird, and sounds nearly as good too. Lookin' for a ZZ Top tribute band... Edited February 9, 2010 by Shaggy Quote
Shaggy Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 (edited) .......'58 EB2 - shabby but all-original. No mud here (bakelite pup is single coil), a lovely very acoustic sound - awesome to play a bass from the dawn of rock n' roll "Banjo" Kluson tuners interesting but crap. Edited February 9, 2010 by Shaggy Quote
Shaggy Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 .......lastly '69 EB-2DC. Very different beast to the '58, a total blues- machine with the deep switch on. Again, no mud; deep, rich and growly, lovely fast neck Quote
retroman Posted February 9, 2010 Author Posted February 9, 2010 OOH Shaggy.......Now that's a gorgeous collection '65 Thunderbird IV   Interesting about the tone of the EB2's. I would describe mine as muddy.......More like an extremely dense bog that's been trampled by Mammoths! Does sound quite good with the baritone circuit switched off Quote
SS73 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Shaggy, awesome collection, I think you're in the lead at the moment. What an excellent bit of porn this is turning out to be. Quote
Shaggy Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Thanks guys, some cracking Gibbos on here ( I really want EvilLordJuju's CMT RD Artist! And his non-reverse 'bird  ) Retroman, re the EB-2 mud; the bridge p/up definitely helps add some bite but I was surprised how articulate it is even on neck p/up only - DR roundwounds and some high mids boost on the amp helps! Quote
spinynorman Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 The incredibly red and pointy Gibson IV Quote
retroman Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 Spinynorman, that looks in really good condition Shaggy, cheers for the tips. I have been using short scale, light guage Roto's on mine. I'll try messing about with the amp EQ a bit more, and see what happens. She really does have a super fast neck, despite the high action. Perhaps some heavier guage DR's will tighten the sound up a bit? We're really getting a tasty display of Gibbo's in this thread now, cheers Chaps Quote

But what a FANTASTIC bass, tone, volume, playability...blimey...this was a brilliant purchase had loads of +ve feedback. I'll post a pic of some rock and roll bass faces when I get some decent pics of the bass. Happy days.......!
Ahem, nice bass shame about the bloke thrashing the life out of it!!!! Quote
retroman Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 The bass, the stance, it all says one thing................ROCK!! PS, what has the guitarist spotted on the ceiling? Quote
He's spotted some of my missed notes probably, either that or he's trying to avoid looking at the old bloke on bass! Quote
retroman Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 A few years back, with my old band, after one song, I put my bass down, knelt down in front of the guitarist, and started to pretend to clean up, with an imaginary dust pan and brush.........."What ya doing"? "Clearing up all those notes you dropped"!! Quote
Stag Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 OK... if it is porn you want, porn you shall have. '72 Les Paul Bass. Plays like an absolute dream, id always wanted an EB3 but the shop I went in had an EB3 and the LP in at the same time. I walked out with the LP as I fell in love with the look of it, and it has so many more tones possible than the EB. The last couple are piccies of my good self using the weapon in action. Quote
