Gust0o Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011
Time this thread had a bump. Too many lovely basses to let it drop. A few months ago I discovered Rippers. It wasn't exactly love at first sight, but now they're really getting under my skin. 78 in Ebony bought from Basszilla
This is my favourite, I think. Some great basses there, Spiny. I'll have to post some more of mine when I get a moment. Quote

It has a Kent Armstrong rebuild at the bridge which, for some reason, does a killer EB3 impression. So I can switch from Cream to Nirvana just with a twist of the chicken head. And it has the best neck ever, for me at least. The natural one turned out to be interesting - it's the older, fatter shape, but the body wood is Alder, so it's quite a bit lighter. Seeing Neepheid's IV makes me a bit nostalgic for the red one I had. And he's not helping my GAS with that Victory Artist either. Quote

spinynorman Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 That's nice. The ultimate rock bass, I think. Quote
Stag Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Gotta love that. Are you into Jack Bruce by any chance (noting you have Marshall backline)...? Quote
rapscallion Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 I'd love to know what happened to the RD I sold to brycebites, last I saw he'd re-made the pickguard (it was warped to buggery) and swapped the P and J's for Darkstars. Real shame I let that bass go, even in its butchered state Quote
lozbass Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 My old Ripper - heavily hot rodded (in two episodes) in the very early '80s Quote
ThunderbirdGirl Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011
Here's a fairly boring shot of my Thunderbird. And where can I get a EB2C from? That's lovely!
O My Goodness...I cannot find one thing remotely boring about your Thunderbird. He is indeed Beautiful! Kick the tires and the light the fires...Thunderbirds are GO! And Thanks for the peek at your lovely TBird. Cheers! Quote
Zydian Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 My '78 Grabber (will post better pictures soon) Quote
bassjamm Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I'm just about to part ways with my Grabber, gonna' miss it... Quote
Gust0o Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I posted this in my personal thread, but it would make more sense to join the rest of the flock here. It's had a good clean and some additional TLC, but is looking all the merrier for it - my 1976 Gibson G3 Grabber: Quote
Shockwave Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Hey guys. Just got a Gibson Grabber through, but the bridge is a bit damaged. What aftermarket bridges have you used on your grabbers? Anything that will line up with the current string thru bridge? Also, the seller was a bit economical with the truth about the condition of the bass. It needs a refret and the maple wear looks worse in real life (So maple will be sanded back) Probably gonna go for a nice hard gloss finish on the neck as well. New scratchplate is in the post! Cheers in advance! Rob. Quote
lozbass Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 +1 Some fantastic Grabbers and Rippers turning up - what a joy, I don't think these basses have had the appreciation they deserve (fantastic players with a very distinctive tone). Gust0o - that G3 is astounding! Great to see one in such condition 35 years on. Shockwave, same too - a great example that will come to life with a bit of care (I'm not sure about the bridge - I know Hipshot produce a nice replacement for the 3 point found on Rippers, but I'd imagine it's the original bent plate on the Grabber) Quote

I know some of the guys on Talkbass would rather see the vintage patina, but I tend to think more of it as dirt... Especially when it genuinely is Besides, I want someone to own this after me, or at least be saying something like wow, that is in great nick 50 years on... Quote

retroman Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 Good to see this thread is still going. Getting some major GAS for the Grabber, Ripper, and RD Artist Quote
Gust0o Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 I was in Banks in town on Friday, ostensibly taking the guitarist for a quick shop... I'm not sure I'll be satisfying much Gibson GAS at the new prices! £2799 for a custom Les Paul (admittedly, a guitar), which the shop chappy managed to point out had the same electronics as the studio LP at £599. Blimey O'Reilly! No Gibson basses, sadly, but did manage a quick tonk on an Eb3... cool, but didn't get to test the neck dive, not with the shop chap still watching Quote
simon1964 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 (edited) I've actually just put this up for sale, so i guess i should post it in the Gibson porn thread while its still mine 1996 Les Paul. Lovely bass, with a huge tone. Edited October 8, 2011 by simon1964 Quote
