geoffbyrne
Right!! I've been playing bass about 5 years now & I'm relatively happy with my progress. I discovered early on I didn't like wide fretboards, but *did* like 5ers. The first 5er I got that suited my hands (small) was the Hohner B Bass V (Cort built). It suits me very well. The next is the Peavey Cirrus BXP V. Slightly wider fretboard, but really nice - currently my No.1 bass. Recently I got aN OLP Stingray 5, & through my MXR-80+ in front of the amp, I love its tone & the B string is superb. However, the neck's not for me as it's one of the baseball-bat variety and my small hand finds it too far of a reach round to the B string. Add to that that I've always admired the Jazz body shape, and you'll see that my perfect bass would be: Jazz body, slim neck, narrow string spacing, 5 string & MM pup in Stingray position. I don't really care about a 2nd pup. Cheap comes into the equation too. Is there anything produced that sounds/looks like that? Cort? Vintage? Either that or I'll trade with someone who likes this kind of neck for a slim one they don't like. I currently have three Prosebass instruments and I love all of them.
geoffbyrne
I must admit to being ignorant as to Prosebass. Educate me? Please? Site's inop. G. Edited February 3, 2010 by geoffbyrne

Site's inop. G.
paul rose, he's a luthier who's a basschatter here. his builds are really well priced and lovely to play, i expect if you PM him he'll give you a rough quote for what you want. i met him at the nottinghamshire bass bash and played a couple of his builds, and i think he had a 5 string jazz with MM pickup there. i THINK it was nearly finished but not quite done so i didn't get to play it. of course, i could just be imagining it and he didn't have anything of the sort there. anyway, i'm by no means anywhere near the best person to tell you about prosebass, i've not got a bass built by him or anything, i only met him one time at a bash. but you should definatly consider him for a custom build that is really well priced. another idea would be to build it yourself? start with say a squier jazz deluxe 5 (which have, IMO a really nice neck. although i've heard others say they really hate the neck) and route for a musicman pickup? or get someone to route it for you? i'm sure your local music shop would do it for you, or if not there has to be a luthier somewhere in your general area. just an idea. tombboy
I was going to say try a Sandberg Cali JM5.... but then you mentioned the 'cheap' word.
josh3184
Musicman sterling 5 would have worked too. Not helping with the cheap thing though
BottomEndian
Not a Jazz body, and the bridge pup looks to be a little bit back from Stingray position... oh, and it only comes in dullard grey... but there's the Ibanez SRX365: Under £300 new, with a slim neck, 16.5mm spacing and an extra pup into the bargain. Honestly, if it came in any other colour I'd have it. EDIT: The Ibanez site actually says 18mm spacing, but dv247.com says 16.5mm. The plot thickens. Mykesbass
Hi Geoff, Having torn myself away from your avatar (big Guinness fan of course), may I be so bold to suggest my very nice Korean built Aria that's up for sale on here - I'm sure the neck is along the lines of what you are looking for: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=69115 Sorry for the shameless commercialism! If you want to try an ATK 5er you'd better get a wriggle on: they seem to have disappeared from Ibanez's UK site. Just 4-strings left.
