Terra
Ok, I've been playing a fair few years now, and I want to give 6 strings more of a go. I know what I don't want, so by using the serlock holms method, I should be able to eliminate everything but the best! Not Ibanez Warwick or Peavey Not a stupid shape Not more than £1500 I really like the look of the schecters that are around, and some of the ESPs look sexy, and it'd be really nice to have a skinnier neck width than the average because my hands are not huge The question is - where can I try a bunch of these out? I haven't had much luck even though I'm based in london (the bass cellar really is terrible) Obviously I want to try a bunch out and buy the best, but it's not like there's a 6-string speciallist around here! I'd be pretty happy to pick up a budget model just to get playing, £150 or less really.
originalfunkbrother
You may want to try The Bass Gallery in Camden. They have a fair bit amount of basses in stock like these ones: http://www.thebassgallery.com/Product_list...r&Strings=6 Futhermore if you would like to go instore, here is the map: http://www.thebassgallery.com/contactUsLocation.cfm Personally, I am not a fan of 6's but if I was I would probably go for a Yamaha. Spector models arent too bad either but the best you can do for yourself is get hold of the ones you think you might like and have a go at them. All the best. Carbon fibre rods in the neck and headstock overlay. I've tried them and they're both awesome super-P-bass tonally (plus active/passive). OutToPlayJazz
+1 for the Yamaha TRB-6. The best sounding and most playable six stringer out there!
Terra
That shop looks really good, I'll pop down this weekend and see what they've got. Anyone know anywhere that has the Yamaha in stock?
XB26354
TRB-6's were the first Japanese incarnation back in the 1990's They were replaced by the TRB1006 made in Korea - it was discontinued near the end of 2008. Yamaha only makes the mega-expensive TRB-6P and the Patitucci signature now so it's second hand only. Highly recommended basses nonetheless. cheddatom
I have a schecter 6 which I love. There's one (if it's not sold) for sale here for £275 which is an absolute bargain!
7string
+1 for the TRB I had a TRB 6 II which was great and (I think) the first 6 string which was affordable. They still come up now and again for under £500, which gives a great excuse to buy 2 (or 3) basses instead of one. Only thing to warn about the TRB 6 II (don't know about the 'proper' TRB) is that it's 35" scale and wide string spacing. Happy shopping

Doddy
It's a shame that you ruled out Ibanez because both the BTB and Soundgear 6 strings are really nice.
Terra
Found myself a nice TRB inc. Case for £740 - thanks so much for your advice guys! So who wants my old crappy hohner?

Anyway, if I had 1500, maybe I would reach a Ken Smith stuff, wouldn't I?

karlbbb
I have a Harley Benton 6 string (budget model) that is actually quite nice, decent tone with a nice B string. I'm about to put it up for sale on here as I need the money towards a repair on my car, it'll be £80 but I won't ship. Could be a possibility just to get your hand in? I really enjoy playing the bass but my car gets me around and to work so I guess I'd rather have that working the most! Quick edit to sort out the link. El Bajo
+1 on the Yamaha TRBs. I got the Yamaha RBX JM2 but it was a close call as to which one to buy, I went for the RBX purely on looks. Also Peavey Cirrus is worth looking at and is great value. On another note it maybe worth buying a second hand one just to see if you like it. Some people just don't take it. tinez
+1 on TRB, had a 5-string - great bass (like all yamahas imho ) a bit out of the price range, but definitely worth looking at - mayones basses. i'm a happy owner of a 6 string custom patriot bass now. the one in the picture. it destroys universe when played too loud
