CHRISDABASS
Hey a friend of mine has an ibanez musician bass he'd like to sell and i just wondered roughly how much its worth?! From what i can make out its a 1979 model, through neck with what looks like a walnut body?? ( does that sound right?) it has 2 pickups and what looks like an active eq (5 knobs and some switches) i'll be honest its pretty beaten up! But it could be 30 + years old so i suppose that could be expected the neck seems straight and with a few tweaks on the bridge and a clean up it would probably be great .......so any advice on price? here's some pics (sorry about the quality) as you can see the main damage to the bass is on the back, the front has been preserved quite well really when i opened the metal control plate to change the battery i was surprised to see its lovely, clean, well wired in there! great!! all the electrics seem to work fine Cheers Edited February 13, 2010 by CHRISDABASS
Shaggy
I'm sure there was a thread recently on these. They're cracking basses, I had one new in '79 (as did a certain Mr Sting). Body wings are stained ash, and they had tuned rods in the neck to eliminate dead spots. I think the last one on here went around the £300 mark so for a scruffy one that'd be your baseline, but good ones can go for £800 on the 'bay. Pics are always good!
I had a fancy for one of these until I watched one climb over £850 about 4 years ago on Ebay - mind you, I don't think you'd get that now. There's an Ibanez Studio on Ebay at the moment, which isn;t a million miles away from the Musician - you could watch how that goes. Bassassin
That's A Musician MC900: http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/44/3.jpg I can't quite see the serial number on the back of the headstock, but it looks like it starts B79 - which would make it February 1979. It generally looks nice, with a few chips around the back body edges - but I'm a little concerned by the lacquer cracking around the head - particularly the one beneath the volute. Is there any structural damage here, like between the fretboard & neck? Apart from that it looks good, and it's good to see all the original hardware present - the propreitary Ibanez bits - Accu-Cast bridge, Velve-Tune tuners & Sure-Grip knobs (they did like their hyphens! ) are rare as a rare thing & usually the first things to be "upgraded" by idiots who think these basses were cheap rubbish. CHRISDABASS
Thanks for the info It seems the cracks on the back of the neck are not structural at all! they're Just in the lacquer i cant see anything more than superficial damage to the finish of the bass it actually plays and sounds really well! Ive never played an older instrument before so i always wondered how they'd hold up over the years
CHRISDABASS
Oh and if anyone is interested in the bass feel free to contact me before it goes on ebay
LeftyJ
That's lovely! Those truly are great basses. I have two MC924L's and they're simply amazing, especially for their age.
Chris2112
Beaten up doesn't matter so much with these basses, since they are made like tanks!
geoffbyrne
That Studio went for £350 - a bargain in my book. G.

LeftyJ
For anyone who's interested, I just wrote an article on my MC924L's on leftybassist.com. It also briefly sums up a little bit of Ibanez Musician history. It doesn't cover MC's produced after 1984 because there no longer were lefthanded versions of the MC range available, it mostly covers the MC924, but the MC900 is mentioned briefly too.
