Machines
Seem fairly pricey to be honest - these look better value to me: http://www.thomann.de/gb/layla_bassguitar_kit_pstyle.htm
john_the_bass
If the quality is as good as any Jap guitar, then yes they might be worth putting together for 200 quid, saying that if you then have to fork out to paint one as well, you might be better off looking for a used CIJ Fender. MB1
MB1. Much cheaper and less mess to SQUIRE! but if you want the D.I.Y factor, a possibility perhaps, not cheap though!
BassBod
I've put a few together, and played them a lot. The body and neck are good, but the body is usually alder. Its the "right" wood, is real wood but can look very boring if only oil finished - depends on the grain. The pickups and hardware are ok but I replaced most of it (except the Gotoh tuners) with WD stuff and Kent Armstrong "Sky" p/ups. For the money they are great basses. Its worth calling them - for example, a finished sunburst body and an oiled neck makes a great platform for a P or J bass, with whatever hardware and pickups you prefer. The only real issue is that of perfect fit - components from different makers don't always work, particularly scratchplates. So if you want to fit an upgrded part, assemble all the bits before you start - it can save hassle. BB
HarryPotter
I can get the body finished for free, so that's not an issue, I know about the cheaper kits, it's the Jap quality that appeals (if it's true).
Jean-Luc Pickguard
I made a fretless precision and a telecaster using brandoni parts. The body & neck are very good quality. Much better than a Squier; more like an MIJ Fender. The pickups are very good, but I didn't use the bridge and tuners as they were cheap generic ones and the pickguard had different hole positions & shape to a fender.
