blackjack
hi again from the newbie. can anyone recommend a good learner book for beginners. i will be buying an electro/acoustic bass. dont know if it matters what bass book you buy. i was going to buy bass guitar for dummies. but dont know if it would be specific for electric bass only. Doddy
You don't need a specialist electro/acoustic bass-I don't think there are any. I like the Hal Leonard Bass Method by Ed Friedland as a good starter book-especially if you can get the complete edition. CanI ask why you are going for an acoustic bass guitar rather than a solidbody?
OldGit
A couple of lessons from a (human) tutor will be a lot better than any book and get you on track a lot faster.

But yeah, taking lessons will do you more good than a book alone.
blackjack
i am in a 3 piece band and we only play acousticly , playing covers. our other guitarist only plays acoustic guitar, we have congas, tamborine, and i play harmonica. we thought it might be nice to add bass guitar. so i said i would like to learn. i thought if i get a electro/acoustic bass it will be good and loud as it would be plugged into amps, enough for were we play, small pubs and clubs. keeps the acoustic thing going. any help or direction i would like to hear the pros and cons thanks. also i was looking for any tips on what acoustic bass to buy for a beginner i am looking to spend about £250.00 on a guitar. so far i have thought about: Michael kelly firefly electro acoustic Tanglewood TAB1-CE electro acoustic IBANEZ AEB8E electro acoustic Epiphone viola bass electro acoustic
blackjack
i am lending a acoustic bass off someone and they are going to teach me some basics, i wanted a book to help me at home all the time
Doddy
Bear in mind that an acoustic bass is not overly loud when played acoustically-an acoustic guitar will blow it away volume wise. Also,if your plugging in to an amp,I'd recommend buying a solidbody, especially for a beginner.

I appreciate that an acoustic bass looks better in the scenario you have drawn here but you really should not expect an unamplified acoustic bass guitar to be loud enough against an acoustic guitar and congas.. If gigs are amplified than you'll be fine. However why not build a tea chest bass? They are louder and funnier than an ABG.. blackjack
so if the acoustic bass and standard acoustic are both amped would it sound ok, or would it still not sound good enough. why is it better to learn on a solid body bass. btw sorry to keep asking what must seem like stupid questions, and repeating my threads a bit, but i am a novice and want to be clear on things. but thanks for putting up with me. OldGit
No worries. Keep asking but check teh WIKI too .. If you are both amped you'll be loud enough. How will you be amplified? Individual amplifiers or through the PA?
Dom in Dorset
I'm almost a specialist acoustic bass player, just because that's what I get asked to play. I've got the same Ibanez as you, not that loud unplugged but the amplified sound is wonderful. Even plugged in the acoustic bass is a different sounding beast, warm and full. One of the bands I play in I use my home made acoustic fretless and a fretted bass about 50/50. For a while I did use my solid body but I've gone back to the Ibanez for the sound. The acoustic pizzo pick up sound blends so well with other acoustic instruments. Having said that I'm planning on going over to a solid body twin neck to cut out the change over between songs, who knows what I may favour in a years time. Dom in Dorset
I went for the Ibanez because it was the cheapest big brand bass that I could afford. I wasn't dissapointed , all the basics are bang on. I had a cheap no name bass and it had a clunky tone , the E string played at a lower volume than the other strings and it didn't hold it's tuning well. The Ibanez has none of these problems, sounds amazing plugged in. For unplugged I can recomend Echo and I tried Fender about 15 years ago that was head and shoulders above anything else at the time. elom
Someone kindly bought me Xtreme Bass by Stuart Clayton at Xmas. Unfortunately they didn't ask me first otherwise I would have told them that I don't need a beginners book (or perhaps they have heard me and thought otherwise! ) It is mint and unopened. If you PM me your address I'll send it to you. No charge, just think of it as a welcome to bass playing.
ash_sak
I own an Ibanez and i really like it, i dont think it's the same one as the one you're looking at but i just did a quick google images search (mine aint with me otherwise id just look at it's label) Anyway, it is really good n i really like the way chords sound of an acoustic, but that could just be me. So yeah anyway, Ibanez acoustics are worth the money i'd say.

blackjack
right guys looks like i have made a complete dick of myself over the weekend on this site, harping on about acoustic bass guitars. this is my story, as i said i play in a 3 piece band and we play covers in pubs, and to try and put our own angle on the set just play acousticly. we thought it might be good to add a bass guitar. i as the novice musician in the band said i would like to try the bass, and said i will get my self a reasonable bass for a beginner. then the other guitarist in the band passed a message on to me that i could borrow his bass, to learn on until i got my own. i assumed it was an acoustic bass as we are a acoustic band. so i have been looking for a decent acoustic bass all weekend at a decent price for a beginner and coming on here asking some stupid questions. most of you replied telling me that i should start with a solid bodied bass as a beginner, and acoustic bass would not be heard much on stage. any way this morning i spoke to the main man in our little band, i told him what i had been doing all weekend. he then turned around and said to me, that he agreed that i should learn on a solid body bass, he said the one i was going to be borrowing is a solid bodied bass! and he could not comment on playing acoustic bass as he has never played one on stage! so after all the crap i have been talking all weekend has been for nowt lol. at least now i know nearly everything bad and good about acoustic bass guitars lol! OldGit
I didn't spot any crap spouting. I thought you were asking perfectly reasonable newbie questions and accepting the answers in an open and genuine way. No need to apologise.. You may get something from reading the WIKI though (look up there at top right of the pages on the site, near the Search function link)
ash_sak
my first post was asking for free pedals... oddly enough i ended up getting one a few weeks later in the recycling thread. (it served me well to)
