Agreed, a good low wattage iron is all you need for wiring.
Gas irons are really useful though, and if yours has actually melted I reckon it could be faulty -- I have a trusty old Antex Gascat 75 which has certainly never got anywhere near melting, even after protracted use. Have you had it long? Might be worth taking back if not.

Just completed my first 2 proper builds...

MXR Micro Amp clone, and a Marshall Bluesbreaker clone. The Bluesbreaker is from BYOC.com and the Micro Amp is from GGG. Oddly enough I tried to make a simple true bypass loop pedal a few months ago and couldn't for the life of me get it to work...But give me something with components and a PCB and I can build them fine! Both pedals worked straight away, no trouble shooting at all.

Now just to finish them - I've designed some Art Work for both but I don't know how/what would be the best method of doing it. What would you recommend?

Next project will be a Wooly Mammoth clone I think...Also got a pedal design of my own I'd like to build!

Cheers
Took me a while to finish this one but here is the final result.
We have a shocking gutshot of the soft underbelly revealing just how disorganised my wiring is. The Mosfet boost circuit vero can be seen peeking out on the left of the tubescreamer board.
The tubescreamer has the 1meg gain pot that the Keeley mod uses, to extend range of available overdrive. We have selectable toggle switches for 2 different diode clipping stages - standard Si or LED which gives a louder harsher distortion. We have a toggle switch for the AMZ 'Phat Boost' mod which switches in a larger value input cap to allow big fat slugs of bass through, this makes the pedal suitable for use as a bass guitar overdrive/distortion too. The 2 toggle switches each have a red/yellow bicolor LEd to show the status.
Mosfet boost switches in an extra 10 or 12db of boost after the tubescreamer to act as a solo boost and really crank up the input of a valve preamp. All in all a fiddly build but a pleasing end result.

Love the finish on this, and the mods will make it massively versatile. How does it perform?

New pedal time again, this one's finally finished off after knocking around half-complete for the past 4 months. It's a clone of the splendid Xotic BB Pre-amp; basically a classic Tubescreamer overdrive unit but with an active eq section by way of treble and bass controls run off a separate TL072 op-amp chip. A really good transparent overdrive tone means you preserve the characteristics of your guitar while adding bite and overdrive to the tone.
With gain down it also acts as a clean boost or a treble boost circuit. Very versatile pedal and a great addition to the growing board of fun.

Does anyone have a 1290 size enclosure spare that they could sell? Preferably pre-drilled for 3 knobs, footswitch, input, output, 9vdc and led? It'd be a great help rather than having to wait and order something in from the States :)

Cheers

I don't have any spare at the moment, you might be better off ordering from musikding.de, it's a german site but I usually get my stuff in a week from there and i think they offer pre-drilled cases now as well.

Is the EN012 diecast aluminium the size you are after? 111 x 60 x 30 mm

I get a lot of stuff off Bob, very fast service and good prices.
Get yerself a stepped drillbit and you are in business.

Awesome thanks for the heads up! I'll check them out.

All these effects look really good. I´m looking to build one this summer, but I´ve got a question (so far).
How would you wire a Big Muff passive tone control onto an overdrive circuit? Between the gain and volume stages? First thing?
Here´s the BMP tone control schem: (the simple one) http://www.beavisaudio.com/techpages/BigMuffToneControl/

And this is the circuit (Red Llama): http://diy.musikding.de/images/stories/llama/llamaschalt.pdf
http://diy.musikding.de/images/stories/llama/llamawire.pdf

Thanks in advance, I´ll let you know when I get a third-degree burn! :)

Cheers for all the links that everyone has posted in this thread... almost too much information goodness, but it's all bookmarked :)

I thought it'd be interesting to start a blog tracking my progress as someone who has never built a circuit in their life, hopefully into someone who can create effects pedals worthy as gifts for friends, live use, recording etc. For everything I build, I'm going to post detailed logs with photos and videos - including the (inevitable) mistakes and troubleshooting. Also, I'll be posting pretentious little concepts for pedals I hope to be able to build in the future, this way they'll pile up and I'll never be short of ideas when I've learnt how to create and tame the beastly creature known as fuzz.

Looking at these posts, I know it's not gonna be a walk in the park but it's something I've always really wanted to have a go at. You can check the blog here, if you want. Cheers :)
