How was your gig last night?

Just got in from a private garden party gig. Only played to the invited 30 people however, if you're going to do a gig like that, it may as well be in a place like this😂

Stuffed with great wine,  champaign and loads of fresh salmon and rare fillet steaks.  Great money, but we felt sort of like a paid-for rich kid's plaything.

They loved it though so who cares?😎

A bit late to the party so rather than post individual gigs I thought I'd just post a block session from the year to catch up. I play in a 50s and 60s Rock n' Roll band and we do either electric or acoustic gigs. We mostly play clubs, pubs, weddings, parties and festival. This is our first year together and out of the 74 gigs we've done so far this year, I would say we have only had 2 naff gigs, the rest have been brilliant and so much fun. We've played anywhere from huge festivals playing to a few thousands, to a train station, to a roof of a pub, bandstands in parks, a biker festival in the middle of a field, school and village fete's, a record shop for international record day, a jive club, restaurants, a hairdressers, a fire station, beer festivals, classic car shows, a beach, carnivals, a donkey derby, a bowls club, a kids Back to the Future party as well as many pubs and clubs. We are just in ths middle of a 4 week summer break and then we have 40 more gigs to take us up to Christmas. Rock n' Roll 😁

Do you mean The Big Feastival at Alex James’ place? It was indeed pishing down there yesterday! When were you on?

Indeed - that was the one... absolutely soaked! Some good food offset it... a little! Was on at 4.

We played both Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

Saturday was a local charity event, a freeby. We packed our own PA, which was fortuitous as when we turned up there wasn't one. Unfortunately our PA isn't big enough for outdoor gigs, it's a pub PA. We went down well, quite a few people came up to us afterwards saying they really enjoyed our set. The weather was good, so all in all, it was an ok afternoon. I don't think we'll be doing the event again though. It's a lot of faff for not a lot return.

Sunday, we played outdoors again for a local pub. The pub is about a mile out of town. It has a field it decided it could use to put on an event to celebrate the 2nd year the landlady had been running the place. Unfortunately, the weather was bloody awful. Somewhere the landlady managed to get hold of a 40ftx40ft open sided tent thing to which they lashed together other gazebos to make a makeshift 'indoor' thing. The whole thing was running late, it was bloody cold, wet...the only good thing was we knew the guys on before us and they'd provided the PA, so we asked if we could borrow their backline so we didn't have to heave our gear up to the field from the car park. We were on last. None of us really enjoyed it, though the punters seemed to like us again, up dancing. Our drummer had got so bored he was half cut before we got on, thankfully not to affect his playing too much :D

Had a Saturday and Sunday wedding gigs this weekend.
Both local too, which is a bonus.
Weird situation on the Sunday though.
Weather was horrible all day, so they hadn't been able to get outside for any photos.
Before going on the photographer said, if a chance came he'd have to take everyone outside for group shots.
I was assured too, that it was the "golden hour" (i've no idea).
Anyway, about 3 songs into our first set, everyone leaves. Everyone. Only people left in the room was the caterers.
Was quite a strange moment!! I've played to small crowds before, during time in originals bands.
Never happened at a wedding though 😆
We carried on playing. And in about 3 songs time, everyone came back in.
On a side note,  it was a great venue for sound.

Golden hour refers to that time of the day when the sun is low in the sky and casts a beautiful light, we photographers love it! You reminded me of a gig I once did in deepest, darkest Somerset where a crowd of happy revellers suddenly drained from the room. Transpires the lunar eclipse was happening and presumably these ingenuous bumpkins wanted to go out and throw stones at it. Very odd when you lose a crowd all at once and it's nothing you've done.

I played (drums) with CreepJoint on Friday. It was our first gig for over 2 years and it felt so good. Our new material is IMHO brilliant. Hopefully plenty of people will check out our new album off the back of it

I then played bass and made weird noises for my crazy heavy band Heavy As Balls. I don't know what it is about this band but it always goes down so well. We're basically a jam band but we've just put an album out. The idea is that we jam until one of us plays a riff that makes us all go AEEEUUUUUUGH, due to it's heaviness. Then we base a "song" around that, the idea being that we have to either come up with a heavier riff that fits with the first idea, or somehow make the first idea heavier. It's supposed to be so ridiculously heavy that it's funny. It's heavy as balls. Oh, and we wear masks and robes and have lights on our guitars and on the sides of our faces. We gave out a load of masks before we played and most of the people I could see from stage were wearing them and either head banging, or laughing, which is the desired reaction. It's a shame our drummer's going away travelling for 9 months as it'd be ace to do a run of gigs.

The last of my little run of 6 dep gigs with the Stones trib band. It was a lovely one to go out on. Played at a local music festival. Last band on, outside in a pub car park. Nice little stage and pretty good facilities.  Load in a bit awkward, but luckily I had a friend along to help me with all that.

It was a really fun set. Everything went well, I felt pretty good about it all. Loads of people up dancing toward the end and storm of applause plus cries for more.

What was really lovely and unexpected was that afterwards, the rest of the band thanked me profusely for all my hard work and presented me with a bottle of Jura whisky!! That was totally unexpected! I was really touched. I then recalled how last week one of them had struck up a conversation about favourite tipples, and I had mentioned Jura whisky. I really had no idea a the time that he was 'fishing' - he did it very subtly.

It's been a brilliant opportunity for me.  I think my playing has improved quite dramatically in a few short weeks and I've had a really good experience of playing at a variety of venues - all quite different in their own way.

And now, back to normality... for the time being! 🙂

Bit off topic, but i train dogs, and we had a client in last week with a puppy called Jura!! I liked the name, and now i know where the inspiration came from!

Look like a good venue - where was it if you don't mind saying? It looks familiar.

 Nice looking cake too!

I have just spent the weekend at the Colne Blues Festival, playing a couple of dep gigs in pubs on the trail and working stage crew at one of the main stages.

The first gig was a bit eventful, playing as the last band in a decent sized pub with a pretty full (not to mention well lubricated) crowd. As we were finishing, the (woefully underpowered) borrowed bass amp blew up! Played the rest of the first set through the rhythm guitarists 30w combo, which only me and the drummer could just about hear! The worrying thing was that the crowd hardly seemed to notice and danced and sang along as if nothing important had gone wrong…! We got the amp working again (to a fashion) for the second set and it managed to limp through the gig on the next day.

Backstage at the main festival was great fun as usual, catching up with old mates that you only tend to bump into at events like this and making new friends that you will hopefully meet again at a festival of some sort in three or four years’ time…
