It's at the bottom of the street, in the corner with Cowgate, just another 100m away from Stramash. Bannermans is mostly geared to rock bands (not only, 'though). It's not huge, but yeah, definitely another place to check. The place wad so packed if I had went there to see a band I would have turned around and left. It was a good gig for us , great audience engagement and lots of attention given to the band. A guy that had too many cocktails was on the dance floor and fell backwards onto a stage monitor. I'm sure we've all seen that one. paul_c2 Posted December 1, 2019 Share Posted December 1, 2019 One again (we played there last Christmas too) Chester Big Band played in the foyer at Chester Storyhouse. It was very well received and the audience said we were tight! Of course, we know the little mistakes that occurred - they always do live, though - but generally it was good quality and fun music. We actually played it very safe with the setlist, and also we only played for an hour, which makes it easier since we can pick the best tunes. For interest, here is the setlist: Rock Around the Clock In the Mood Santa Baby A Little Blues Please Fever Blue Moon Big Bad Handsome Man The Christmas Song I loves you Porgy Birdland Valerie Ain't No Other Man Tequila Little Brown Jug Blue Suede Shoes (Reserve) Favourites of mine are "Aint no other man" - our wonderful singer Sam really gets into this one. And Birdland is always a lot of fun on the bass (Jazz bass of course....back pickup and turn it up a bit). Fever went really well with the bass+singer+fingerclicking at the start and end, gave me goosebumps! Needs a little bit of concentration to do it perfect, especially on fretless. The Dreadnought Rocks club in Bathgate is a pretty good venue that specialises more in tribute bands nowadays. Club in Cardiff already rammed at 8.15, had to carry the gear including double bass upstairs and across this dance floor right through this very crowd as there wasn't any other way in. Have to say though, a brilliant crowd, very cool people and definitely up for a party, & a very nice lady gracefully pushed a way through the crowd for me on the way out to get my bass out in a kind of double bass conga manoeuvre. Big brawl broke out at one point which was a shame and the PA packed in briefly but otherwise amazing stuff. Exceptionally good gig for the band, everything on stage was just right, despite having to make do with only one drummer (we usually have two) and had a dep rhythm guitarist (who also sang a few songs) that we hd never payed with before. He did an excellent job, and will be playing with us again as our regular chap will not be able to make all the gigs next year. There was a good crowd in, place was pretty fun, and the area in front of the stage was a crush of happy people dancing and singing along. Because of the different line up, we were able to re-think our positions on stage, and I changed from stage left behind the keyboards to stage between the two guitarists - much better, I was able to hear and communicate with our lead player, resulting in much better transitions between songs and better jams. That was the last Grateful Dudes gig of the year, and marks the end of my second year with the band. Looking forward to my third - last night's venue has booked us back for six gigs in 2020. Can't wait! The gear I used last night was a Fender Jazz deluxe four string, MiM about 20 years old, strung with light LaBella flats and played with a heavy pick, through an Ashdown Rootmaster and Barefaced Super Compact, no FX. The sound person (Veronica, we have worked with her before) surprised me by mic'ing up my cab rather than using the DI out, and people out front were very complimentary about the sound of the bass. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Second set was much better though. We had a trio of Christmas songs prepared but we ran out of time so only ended up being able to play one of them. It seems to be fairly common that we have to cut a few songs from our set list on the night these days - what generally happens is the drummer (who books the gigs) sends round an email saying something like "Okay, they've told us to play from 9-12, so shall we aim to get there at 7:30?" to which the guitarist then replies "I can't get there until 8". Inevitably we don't start our first set until 9:30, and so by the end of the night we are forced to skip a few songs. I'm not entirely happy about it - I pride myself on my personal reputation for being punctual. I think it's probably out time I raised my concerns. The gig was a pretty good one, on the whole. I didn't get my EQ quite right for the circumstances (hollow wooden stage) but I got by. One thing I've noticed recently is that I seem to sometimes start a song in the wrong key. It seems to happen where we have two songs with a similar feel, and one's in E and the other's in Eb, and I get them the wrong way round. I think I've also been starting to get a bit complacent, now that I've been gigging lots of these songs for over a year, and I maybe don't practice at home as much as I should. S.P.
