How was your gig last night?

Just came home from a bloody awful gig. Terrible monitoring, idiot doing the sound who looked and acted battered. Just one of those 'why are we bothering' affairs.

There were lots of people taking photos and videos of our gig this evening, but unfortunately I wasn't one of them, so you'll have to make do with a brief description.

 

We were at a very small pub that we've played many times before, but this year the dates just haven't aligned to get any in the book. So it was nice to revisit and kick off the Christmas season (it's ok, it's December now).

 

As it's a tiny pub we decided to "go acoustic" again. We've done a couple of those recently and thoroughly enjoyed them. Tonight was fabulous. The crowd really enjoyed something slightly different and the place was rocking - especially when we got them to sing Since You've Been Gone. Playing the EUB was a challenge, from the sublime (White Christmas, Moon Dance, Stuck In The Middle) to the ridiculous (War Pigs, Witch Queen, Crossroads)

 

Rig: Stagg EUB, Fender Rumble v3 500 combo, tinsel

Footwear: black 8 hole DMs

 

Edit: I must give a special mention to the guitarist for playing the guitar solo in Whiskey In The Jar... on a kazoo! 😂

Another gig tonight, this one local pub 4:30-6:30, really short gig for us, and really well paying. Easy setup (if tricky parking), noone started a fight, so all good. It was a good first half, second half was a bit weird, the guitarist complained to the drummer about always playing so fast, so we did a couple of songs really slow and it was actually pretty hard to do them at that speed. Think the drummer wasn't in the best of moods as the drum lights weren't working. and we were probably still knackered from yesterday

Sound was good until half way through the second half when there was an edge of feedback. it was my mic which had somehow got much louder and had a resonant peak in it - no idea what happened, but turned it down and it was fine. My stand was near the PA, maybe something connected.

 

Oh after the request last night of chesney hawkes, another woman came up to us with a request, I said, we can only do requests if it is on our list, expecting something equally as odd, but it was sex on fire so we did that one

I don’t know if anyone has attempted busking this tune, but from my experience it ain’t that easy!

Written by Nik Kershaw, it’s fairly straightforward until the middle / solo section where it modulates

up and then back down again - quite a clever song which always seems to go down well.

" Really well paying" That's my favorite type of gig. We have one coming up. A corporate Christmas Party.

 

Requests can get dicey. I saw a member of a 60s hit making band ( 4 hits in our top ten) now in his 70s play a solo small bar gig. Great singer and musician but apparently pretty bitter about the music business.  Someone requested Paul Simon's The Boxer.

His response" sure, I'll play it, 20 bucks." Wow, that's bold.

We got a few requests for rock songs which our singist politely declined, and a couple of requests for Erasure, which I'm sure will be ignored as they're out of his vocal range.

 

I think I also need to find a rock group to satisfy my need to rock out more.

I am sure it is easy enough if you have practiced it, but to be honest, I doubt I have ever listened to it all the way through and frankly we can mess up songs we have practiced so it wouldn't be an option. I just love the way random members of the public always say 'can you play this, its really easy', and they are always people who don't play anything and almost never can remember all the words anyway.

Indeed - it also makes me laugh when someone asks for a request, and when told the band don’t know it

they start singing it to you as if that will help, usually whilst you’re playing another tune as well. 😆

We (Choked) were at the Marrs Bar in Worcester last night supporting local band Phon's album launch.

Twasn't very full, perhaps 40 peoples and they all sat round the outside like cool muso types (I usually do this too).

As everything was a bit late - I hadn't been able to arrive till after 7pm so no sound check - we did our short'n'sharp 30 minute set (probably a blessing to all!).

However, all went fine, drummist managed to finish on 3 in "Knockout", I did my bass solos with extra widdles'n'pops and all was generally groovy.

As there was a fine PA (with obligatory overloud bass drum thwack) I just took the Markbass 2x10 to be powered by the Crown amp with DBX compressor and BBE pre, all front-ended by Helix and Parker bass.

Shoes were zebra striped brothel creepers.

Got home by 2230 to a nice dram of PC7 cask strength...

There really needs to be a device that you can fit to your sound engineer to give them a good slap with every canon-blast kick of the bass drum. It's ruined so many gigs imho

We are not only getting shoe commentary, but post gig Malt whisky preferences (I think!).  Can I ask what PC7 is?  And let's continue with this great trend!

However, I've just looked and noticed that I have its smoother, older and slightly weaker brother, the PC10 which comes in at a deeply un-manly 50%.

Amazes me when we play a ticketed sold out gig and we still get requests for totally unrelated to Glam songs. We even had one young lady ask for anything by Beyonce. ???  At a Glam Rock Tribute show .............. really. Did you read the posters or adverts on FB for the venue before buying a ticket at £15. DUH !!!!!!!!

I'm much more of a fan of the heavily gated but still slightly round'n'soft reggae kick drum sound. 

But as many soundfolks seem to be metalheads they feel the need for it to be more like a road drill.

I have a video of my son playing along to another Nik song and getting to the end shouting “stop changing key!!!” 🤣
