Kinross - Backstage at the Green. It's quite a big, plush hotel, with a converted concert room (that used to be a swimming pool at one point, I believe). It is a bit of a circuit gig where a lot of heritage / ex big(ish) names play, along with some of the bigger tribute bands. Still about 30 tickets left, as of Friday! 

 

It's a really pretty village and a great place for a night away if you fancy coming along with the missus (always rooms available). We get a few hotel rooms as part of the deal, so it's one of the those gigs where we get the chance to have a few beers after the gig. We play it every year, always great fun.

Just back from doing a rare solo acoustic guitar/vocals gig. It turned into a brilliant evening.
 

Was beset by technical gremlins at the start (buzzing power supplies, dodgy wiring and breaking a string on my main guitar in the first intro to the first song…).

 

But just used my backup £40 Yamaha FG512SJ with a Seymour Duncan woody in the sound hole all gig and it sounded great.  
 

The venue usually has music on Saturdays, so Sunday afternoons currently seem quiet for passing trade (though a load of my friends and their mates came along and made a racket). Maybe Saturday nights would suit my rowdy loud playing more anyway. 
 

I needed a decent gig after a rubbish few weeks in several aspects of life so this one did the job perfectly. Very happy indeed.

@bigthumb I feel for you. A year ago we had a stable band, the rhythm guitarist was not the best, but we’re were gigging and getting 

repeat bookings. 
 

The aforementioned guitarist, a heavy smoker, had a heart attack and had gone from barely adequate to … well let’s just say he has got worse. The lady gfeee gigs of 24 were not our best as the great of us dreaded gigs, the last practice at the beginning of January was really hard work. The gig has dried up, first booking in 2025, May and we have about 5 gigs confirmed. 
 

All the band know the problem and it might mean reforming under different name. The question is. Who acknowledges the elephant in the room? I think it has to be the poor old bassist that either drops the grenade or leaves.
 

Anyway good luck in your quest  to re-form the band.

Back at the Piv in Nuneaton for another Sunday 4-6 slot. It's one of our favourite gigs, with a nice laid back vibe. They seemed to have the heating turned up to 11 though, so it was darned hot! There again it always seems like a "proper" gig when you're sweating, so I threw a few bass stances for good measure.

 

I'm normally a reasonably tidy player, but this time had a rare melt down in the 2 octave riff in the middle of Frankenstein. Ah well, it gave my bandmates something to laugh at.

 

No photos this time, so you can have another punter photo from Friday which I quite like because it shows how much fun we have playing together 😁

Afternoon / early evening gig at The Imperial in Filey with blues trio ‘ The Alligators’. 
Small venue with no stage, but reasonable amount of room for us. Took my recently

acquired Sire U5 short scale straight into Rumble 500 combo. 
We haven’t played since December, so nice to get back to it. I made one or two

stupid mistakes but nothing to scare the horses. We’re having a rehearsal this week

( my 2nd with the band!) so hopefully we can refine some bits here and there. 

Anyway, the gig - comfortably full pub of people who had come out on a rainy 

afternoon to listen, including a lady who reckoned we’d played ‘Black Magic Woman’

for her before somewhere and asked for it again - the BL couldn’t remember it - so we

did it for her anyway. Two sets of around 50 mins just flew by, and a great response from

the audience. I love doing Sunday afternoon gigs, and even an hour away for me still home

before 9pm.

Typically we get an average 1-2 gigs a month with the Glam band. I decided to leave the punk band and i think its now folded completely. That's why i went with the classic rock covers band too which is at rehearsals stage. Hopefully ready mid summer.

You don't get many outdoor festival gigs in Scotland because of the unpredictable weather.  I have literally had snow, wind rain and glorious sunshine all in the same day during May a few yrs back while on a short holiday at Loch Ness.

I've heard of it thru our very own @Steve Browning who i think has played there in recent years.

Its a gorgeous area with some fascinating history and of course the home of Nessie and the greater mountain Haggis. That's the one with 2 shorter legs on its left hand side for running round mountainsides altho it can only run in a clockwise direction.

3 gigs in March with Glam band. I've quite enjoyed the down time to be honest especially since deciding to call it a day with them at the end of the year or a replacement is found whichever comes first.

Drummer told me yesterday they had no plans to replace me and the band might just fold as he's 66 this year and might retire too depending on whether they can persuade me to stay and continue a bit longer.  No pressure then.

Oops, I forgot to report about last weekend - a double header so I must have been knackered on the Sunday!

 

Friday night with Nine Lives at the Butchers Arms, Inverurie.  Two people in the bar when we first went in, lots of car parking spaces nearby, we feared a "paid rehearsal".  Thankfully some more folk came in and made a night of it so in the end it was quite an enjoyable gig.  Gear was G&L L-1000 then Epiphone Thunderbird into Markbass toan cubes.

 

Then Saturday night, on to the Harbour Lights in Peterhead.  Again, we arrive and the place is empty.  And yet again, it got better as the evening progressed and by the end we had a small but enthusiastic audience, including one guy who was performing backflips to some songs!  Gear was Sire Z7 then Yamaha BB1200 into the Markbass terrible duo.  Had a great sound because the place has monitors which they let us use and it made for a great onstage sound (yes, there was an actual stage - luxury!)

I don't think there's anything wrong with that type of marketing phrase. I've seen some local guys do it around here.

 

Now that I think about it, we're booked at The Harley Motor almost once a month. Is that a " residency " ? Lol

How do you like the active pre-amp on the G&L?

The Wunkay doesn't have an active pre-amp, it's 100% passive.  I did own a Tribute L-2000 back in the day, and honestly I never used the active bit because it's just a line boost, or a treble boost which I never liked the sound of.

 

The Wunkay does have OMG mode though, and I do enjoy engaging that from time to time...

I didn't know you were thinking of leaving the Glam band?

 

I'm 71 and I don't know how much longer I'll be doing it. I like the performance part of it. It's all the other stuff that gets tiresome

I guess I like the active pre-amp on my 1994 American made G&L ASAT. I think it sounds better when both pick ups are engaged

Our 80s punk band played at the Brit club last night. Right place, right audience= a great gig with fantastic atmosphere and energy. Played at the Canadians the other month and they didn't get it, played to the Brits, our home crowd, and they loved it. Middle aged ex punks singing anarchy in the UK! Half the audience weren't even born in the 20th century but they got the vibe, joined in and loved it. You have to enjoy the Jam and Clash for energetic sing alongs. I wouldn't have picked it as my fav but a Town Called Malice went down a storm with everyone. 

On the technical side used a zoom L20 for the gig and it sounded great and was easy to use. Also recorded it the SD card. Also went old school with old passive Yamaha speakers and amps.... best sound we've had so far. Could just be the desk that made the difference but equally loved going to passive speakers.
