How was your gig last night?

Lovely return to the Exchange Theatre at Sturminster Newton down in deepest Dorset. Drove past Stonehenge. 200 mile trip back home and in bed for 4am.

 

Awesome three tribute act gig and audience was a full house.

 

Played as house bass player today at a local Nottingham Jam while practically dead on my feet.

 

Currently eating Cherry Pie and Custard before I predictably fall asleep in an armchair.

I saw them headline a punk festival in Bath in '95. I remember thinking how good the bass player was.

It was pre-internet and I didn't read the NME so I didn't know it was Bruce Foxton 😖

As much as i liked Bruce Foxton in The Jam i think Ali McMordie was the better player for me. His style suited SLP better.

Both great players tho.

Thanks Dave. Yes, it seems to be a regular occurrence for me these days. Lytham St Annes on Thursday and Felixstowe on Saturday this week.

went to see a mate's band last night

Smallish pub. Bass player was using Ampeg SVT and a marshall 8x10

I got up to play a few Beatles numbers, wow the bass was a bit lively

Hurtsfall were upstairs at The Corporation in Sheffield on Saturday supporting Deviant, Zeitgeist Zero and Iamimperfect.

 

Really well run venue and evening with a proper stage manager making sure that everything ran smoothly. Also massive "backstage" area for the bands and gear plus refreshments. Only blip in the proceedings was that our backing was completely muted when we came to play and for some reason it took 3 goes for the sound engineer to find the right channel(s) and unmute them, which was a bit embarrassing and shouldn't be happening with digital programmable desks.

 

Despite the fact that we went on 10 minutes after the doors opened, there was a decent turn out to see us, and it didn't look as though that many additional people came in after we had finished. All the bands were great. I particularly liked Iamimperfect and will make an effort to see them again. We obviously went down well as we sold a load of merch afterwards, and with the gig ending at 10.30 was back home just after 12.00.

 

I believe some people like to see the empty stage set up, so here it is:

 

 

Amp and cabs and all the stuff in the middle of the stage at the back was for the other bands.

Next gig is the 25th April at The Crafty Cove in Whitby with Westenra and Social Youth Cult as part of the Whitby Goth Weekend. I believe that this is almost sold out already.

I’m not surprised the bass was lively - using an SVT /8x10 set up in a smallish

pub! Didn’t know people were still doing this, but strangely glad they are…..🙂

Another nice local gig at a WMC on Saturday. It was a little quiet in the first spot despite it being pretty full but it rowdied up nicely in the second spot with a filled dance floor all the way through. We had our own ‘70s Bez’ turn up who danced to just about every song and brought a load of glam wigs for the punters to wear.

First proper outing for the shorty Stingray which performed nicely, deffo need to go up a gauge on the strings though….

Next week we’re back to pub work at a lively little venue called the Service Station in Hull…..we had em dancing on the bar as I recall last year.

It must be a year since I've played upright in public, but I recently joined the band attached to a Morris side. They go out and about in their own right, including to a 'mass jam' at a local pub last night. The band comprises violin, bodhran, washboard, clarinet, octave mandolin, piano accordion and now double bass. It was a very good evening - the organiser went around the room, everyone had the choice to do either a solo number, or to choose a tune for everyone to play from "101 songs for ukulele" books that were provided.

I used to view folk club sing-arounds as creeping death. It really winds up your stage fright waiting for your turn to come around. I much prefer a jam.

It's the first time I've been to something like this, but there was a really relaxed atmosphere about it. Some people did solo spots, but others just chose from the book. I must also admit to a bit of boredom at some folk clubs waiting 2 hours for my turn to play 2 songs when some of the performers aren't so good.

A bit of an odd one last Friday for the seven piece swing/jazz standards band. ! 100 years ago North Bay was incorporated as a city and there are many events going on to mark this and we played at the Italian club's old style dinner dance at their hall. An hour of cocktail music and then they fed us and the 160 guests and at about 8:30 we started our dance sets that included some Italian songs. The crowd was older and although we had a few dancers and others who sat around to listen to us we knew it was going to be a  earlier night than they planned. We played two sets and finished not long after 10:30. Great food(prime rib) and I had chats with some of the attendees so all in all not bad and the ten or so Italian tunes we learned went over OK and we had some compliments on our music.

As usual my weapon of choice was my Shen SB100 straight into our Bose PA. We were set up in a corner in a fairly large hall so we had no idea how it actually sounded. 

Downside is that after 7 years as a band the drummer decided to quit the next day after enduring a lot of hassles and criticism from the trumpet player. I am also a target but so far I can handle it, she is a music teacher and sometimes likes to treat us like one of her school students. She is often right but her attitude is the problem and no one ever calls her on her mistakes, very frustrating but I like the rest of the band and the music so I am hanging in. We have a good dep drummer for the next couple of gigs in May and June and BL is starting a search for another drummer, the one who quit is very good and was an asset to the band.

Life goes on.

If she is willing to dish it out, then I would not be afraid to tell her what you've shared with us. The occasional mention of her more egregious errors would do no harm, especially if delivered with meticulous politeness and respect in a supportive manner "I could see you were having a few minor issues with that passage, have you considered...?"

We never call each other out on mistakes. I think it's one of the reasons we've stayed together since 2007.

 

Plus, with the amount of mistakes we make we'd end up spending more time calling each other out than actual playing. Lol
