We played our bass relay gig tonight to a birthday party in a pub , and boy were they ready to party , a top night all round , rhythm guitar reckoned it was his most enjoyable gig ever , and he has done some work . We had 2 good party enquiries at top dollar , met 2 fellow BC'ers who came along and we raise a few pennies for the Relay charity , that makes it a win,win,win,win scenario
The only problem is sleep won't happen, and I have a couple of customers to see in the morning

and then go on stage at 11pm. Didn't really get the chance to do that so we went on stage 'blind' and
gave the soundman some hints as we went along.

Anyway, the crowd were AMAZING. There were a load of BBoys and Girls in the audience and they started a battlewhen
we played 'it's Juts begun', then someone started some social dancing and the whole crowd (of about 150) were doing
one massive synchronised dance! And then there was the soul train...

Played The Farmers Boy in St Albans with The Tuesday Club.

We were 3 band members down (out of 8) so had the rhythm guitarist had to do the work of 2 gtrs, and me for my sins, had to do the vocs of our female singer, The Minx. I now have much more respect for The Bee Gees, let me tell you!

But, the gig went very well, the audience were great, and our singer, in his best Iggy-form, managed to throw himself on several tables, breaking one, and totally mesmorise the crowd. I don`t think they`d seen anything like that before.

And, with a bit of respect for the venue, we told them to not pay us this eve, but to fix said table, then deduct the costs from our fee - only fair, and they have already invited us back for 2 more gigs - maybe they need a whole new set of furniture.

did a depp gig and it was being recorded,for demo reasons? sound guy trod on an already suspect jack plug,causing bass to cut out at random,apart from that great gig.

Depped with a very busy wedding/function band tonight and got some more work out of it as well for next weekend -Saturday and Sunday nights.

Used the trusty Paddy Ashdown 4x10".

Band were tuned down a semitone due to the fact that the singer felt his voice wasn't up to singing to regular pitch so I had a lovely rattley bass sound tonight, coupled with the fact that quite a few of their songs I already use the D-tuner led to some pretty big, fat C# open notes.

Getting to use their bass backline next week to save me taking mine which is an Eden Traveller head and a really small 4x10". Think I saw D410T on the back panel but its dead short for a 4x10"

The band leader had given me a list of most of the stuff that they played on Tuesday with the keys but gave me the wrong Key for the Stevie Wonder Song"I Wish" Been learning that song all week but I'm going to learn it in the right key as well as Sir Duke which they also do for next weekend. One of the most complicated sounding tunes but actually not as hard as it sounds.

Played some crackers including a jangly blues piano version of Honky Tonk Woman, a ska version of Brown Eyed Girl and a mega medley of Play that Funky Music which went into Brick House by the Commodores, Sex Machine and then Take me Out . I managed to find myself playing the verse of What is Hip during it as well. Played Tiny Dancer as well. Never had the opportunity to play that one before

Looking forward to next week's gigs now

One of our monthly residencies cancelled - bah! New management taken over venue and aren't commiting to live music until they are settled in. Hopefully we will get gigs back again there but too soon to tell yet. Oh well, 2 gigs next weekend will make up for it.

Played The Watering Hole in Perranporth last night - its always a fantastic gig. Took our big PA (6k HK, Mackie, Peavey etc) and shook the walls. Couple of hundred people in there going berserk by the second set. They nearly managed to topple a PA stack over with a bit of exuberant moshing to RATM Killing in the name of....!
My 3rd time there and it just gets better every time. Bob the owner really looks after us with a food/drink tab for the couple of days we are there as its a 300 mile trip down from London and we stay for a couple of days usually.
Cant wait for the next one on Aug Bank Holiday.

Played a new venue in my home town. It was full capacity, so atmosphere-wise it was fantastic. Only problem with it though was the lack of separation between crowd and the band. Once people got leary later on and started surging forward, they were toppling over the monitors and bouncing about inches away from our faces. Ended up with a pint smashed over my pedal board mid-song... Luckily; I reacted fast and pulled the power supply out my power block. (Thank god for true bypass pedals). The boards up against the radiator for a week a so to be on the safe side. (Fingers crossed).

A weekend of pub gigs for me. A fun one in Fulham Friday, but Saturday in Leyton was awesome. It was a proper old fashioned East End pub and we were booked to do 3 sets but the landlady asked us to do one more set at the end. That's when we really turned it on and pulled out a few songs we hadn't done in a while, and we nailed the lot. The place was jumping. Sore fingers and my voice is shot now but totally worth it.

Two gigs, first with the new drummer.
First Frid Chevys pub Warrington.
Singer was an hour and a half late, neatly avoiding any load out duties and no reason offered.
The pub itself has a great large stage, but its electrics are dangerously bad.
We lost a horn diaphragm in the drum wedge and possibly burned out a small mini mixer also for the drummer, when a spike came through.
Other problems continued through the night with spikes and crackles on various mixer channels, causing a flurry of cable and input changing to no avail.
My Ampeg amp stopped working for the first time in a year of hard use and I had to sit out a whole song..
During the break the landlord offered to turn off a mountain of dj equipment in the booth which he said "always causes problems for the bands.."
Cheers for letting us know promptly..
He's got a sparks booked in to sort it next week,apparently..

Second gig at Cabin 5150 in Macclesfield.
Lovely top floor wood roof and brick walls gig, decent stage, decent PA.
Unfortunately it's run by enthusiastic owners who don't know what they are doing.
The digital o2r desk proved difficult for the operator, and I didn't notice any EQing in evidence.
The sound man/owner expressed disapproval of our use of backing tracks and when halfway through the first set a loud buzz was heard in the monitors he turned the backing track chan off and went back to his cig downstairs and outside.
Leaving us backing track less till he came back and I got off stage approached him and expressed my earnest desire that he turn it back on.
Not enjoyable, with a sense of dislocation throughout and a feeling of slight sneering in the air.
We won't be back.
Learned a lot and will put into effect for the next gig on Frid.

Great gig last night in Filey....smallish pub so used the "lite" rig which still sounded pretty punchy..... Capacity crowd, very appreciative & we played up to it. Not a bad gig for us on saturday at the duke of wellington near boston. Interesting pub in the middle of nowhere by a caravan park.

A very drunk chap at the end kept shouting that we should go on x factor and that simon cowell would "definately" sign us up.

Quite flattering really but im not sure if mr cowell is looking to add an ageing rock covers band to his roster

Another great gig, this time in Bristol. Nice on-stage sound, helped by a very competent and unfussy sound guy.
Audience were starting to flag as we did 1 hr 45 straight through but when we played 'Move on Up' the whole place
went bonkers and people were dancing on the bar!

I think I spotted a Basschatter there as well - standing by a pillar appreciating the sound - I hadn't arranged to meet anyone
but I saw him and my spidey (basschatty?) senses were a-tingling. Who was it?.. [size=4] [/size]

A wedding at Tavistock Town Hall.

As a classic rock covers/originals band, we get to do a surprising amount of weddings, no idea why really. Just nice to have the added gigs and income stream. As per usual for a wedding, first set was playing to the empty dance floor, second set far more manic!
All in all, a good one.

Our next gig is the Tavistock Civic Ball!

Played a gig with a Rammstien tribute band at the Roadhouse in Birmingham on Friday. They had NO BASSIST! so I took my new Ashdown rig. Worked like a beast.
Gig was just amazing. Full of bikers and hot girls. Got rid of about 10 albums.

Bostin' jam night last night!
It was the first outing for the new (side project) band and we got a really good reception. My first time ever on BVs as well!
Great atmosphere afterwards. I had loads of really positive comments about my playing, appearance and general on stage attitude until I started to believe I was bloody Kim Deal.

Drummer and I also went up with our main band. I felt really good about that, as hopefully we are giving the impression that we are versatile musicians who people want to play with. Main band also went down well, but tbh this was partially because we were last on and most people had left except our close friends!

I have to say I feel so bloody proud of myself today it's not true. Not just because my performances are improving, but because it was me who got the side project together in the first place. I still can't quite believe I did all that. Next goal will be to branch out from the comfort zone of our usual (very friendly) venue and maybe do some other jam nights in the area.

We kicked off with 'Bohemian LIke You' and that was the one that got the best reception all night*. It seemed to work really well with 2 girlies singing it. When I got in the car to go home, I switched on Radio 2 and 'Bohemian Like You' was playing! I took that as a really good omen. It's a sign I tells yer!

*I mean to say the best reception we got with either of the bands. Not that it was the best song of the entire evening! That honour goes to another local band called Buzzard who did some great stuff including a storming cover of Ace of Spades.

Yeh, Tuesday nights are not the best for post work socialising! But I'll let you know if there's anything in the pipeline that might actually be worth a bit of a drive.

Tuesdays is our local jam night and last night we had a Blues Brothers theme, it went great a bunch of us dressed up (I went as Duck Dunn, obviously) and The guy who runs it went to a lot of effort with his pall who between the two of them look the spit of Jake and Ellwood. I got to play Everybody Needs Somebody, Gimme Some Lovin, Peter Gunn Shake Your Tailfeather, I've been wanting to play Everybody... for years so was grinning after that.

Best bit is, the fellow who organised it has a taste for it now and is making noises about doing a proper tribute night at the venue.

on thursday night I deppped a 2nd time in a 5-piece pub-rock/pop/soul-coverband (2 female singers (one of them plays keys, too), drums/voc, git and me on bass). we only had one rehearsal for the first gig 3 weeks ago and I had to use sheets for the 30+ songs we did since I didn't even know some songs I had to performe - thank god I love improvising . the pub was a small one at the reeperbahn in hamburg that would be more than stuffed if it was 100 people. so around 50 punters appeared and it felt comfortable. 3 songs in the first set had been a bit wobbly but the rest went very well and the crowd loved it.
It was the first time I used my lightweight bass rig as a standalone for bass. the drummer was so loud, that I asked the guitarplayer to change the amp positions we used last time (then I had to use a Roland basscube 100 as monitor with the di to pa, that delivered a sound that I really didn't enjoy). He used his 2x12" fender combo (I dind't check the model) as a monitor angled to the side wall of the stage and miked through the pa and I was able to put my rig in the right position to hear myself and rock the house. I really had to krank it up but since I used a wireles because of the narrow stage I could check the sound in the room before the gig. the pa in this club is cheap crap so the band asked some friends who are soundtechs to help a bit and what can I say I loved my sound, the band sound was fine and even the owner complimented me for the good sound of the band. So I proved again that as long as it's not downtuned metal or heavy dubstep a good 1x12" cab with tweeter, a poweramp with 350w on 8 ohm, and a good 2 channel small tube-preamp are more than enough to deliver a great sound with a 5-string even in loud/bad environment up to 100 people. for more punters there should be a proper pa then anyway...
