Terrific gig at a little village pub The Nags Head, Moreton. Recently changed hands and now serves 'real' Mexican food, not just TexMex - absolutely delightful.

Local-ish gig for me, Lion Brewery, Ash nr Aldershot. On my way messages start coming through that keyboard player has broken down near home at a petrol station. So we have played as a four piece a few times so it's no great problem to juggle the set but we have just rehearsed six new songs all of which need the keys and his vocals. Gutted was the word and our singer (drama queen) was not a happy bunny, she seemed to think he could just abandon the car and get another out of thin air so the atmosphere before we started wasn't great. Now this isn't a great paying gig and we tend to try new stuff on the locals who know us well to gauge opinion. I'm a driver by trade and as far as I was concerned sh*t happens and we just get on with it. So we plough through a first set which still went down well and come off to texts that he's managed to get the car home and chucked his gear in his missis car who luckily wasn't gigging herself. 10.50pm and he turns up, about an hours drive away! Fair play to him. 11.20 and he's rushed his arse to set up and away we go. At the end of it the new songs went down a storm and by the time we finished at about 12.30 we were buzzing and the pub was rocking. Got another tonight, more local to me, hopefully he'll be able to sort something as its a new one for us.

Last night we were at a Working Men's Club, somewhere in Yorkshire.

It took me an hour and a half drive each way. Coronation Street on TV when I arrived. (Story I told the band: 'Carla' came in our local Asda once - I like to think she was looking for me). The dancefloor space came in useful as we couldn't all three fit on the small corner stage. Set of musical critics off in far corner of room, muttering about various tones on our stage, eyeing and rating our gear and telling their 'muso stories' in a conspicuous manner. I love it when musos come to watch us.

The room was pitch black for both of our spots, except for stage lights. Couldn't see the audience, though they were receptive enough. Good-sounding room. Reasonable priced lager. When it came to collecting our fee, we had to contact the person who booked us to get it corrected (he was off that night - drummer had text confirming fee on his phone), but that happens and wasn't any function of the club. McDonalds for fries and milkshake in Colne on the way home.

We played at The Wheatsheaf in Banbury last night, a nice local gig for us (me in particular as it was within walking distance of home!). We were opening for a young hardcore/dubstep from Portsmouth called Seething Akira, and a heavy prog/post-rock band doing their first ever gig before us. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to soundcheck, unlike the other two bands, so it was simply a question of setting up in front of an already warmed up audience and going straight into our set, which was far from ideal. Also we were using unfamiliar house gear, and poor monitoring made it really hard to hear much. But we played well, good and tight, and apparently it sounded good out front (we were told) but I think we're all feeling a bit deflated this morning about not being able to sound check and get the on-stage sound right. We seemed to go down well, which is good as we were a bit apprehensive about how we would, our set of modern rock covers being a million miles away from the two bands either side of us. I was pleased with the job I did. I was using my Stingray, into the house Fender amp, which sounded ok.

Anyway next weekend it's another hometown gig, this time using our own gear and PA for a full 2 hour set. Should be good.

Bit of a corporate gig for us last night playing for the company one of our guitarists works for. It's a holiday company specialising in cycling tours so pretty laid back and casual out doors types. Went really really well and plenty of folk up dancing and having a good time. I'm almost ashamed to say this but we played a very well known tune and the place went mental even the hotel manager was shaking his thing and singing along. That tune was...........wait for it...........wait for it...........ALL RIGHT NOW. Rock n Roll eh it's a funny old game :-).

On Friday night my folk-punk originals band 5 Hills Out played at Ye Olde Talbot in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.
There were a few 'firsts' both in terms of songs and line-up and all in all it went well.

Our own Andyjr1515 took a break from making his fantastic basses and guitars and made the 40 mile round trip to see us.

A wedding for me (as usual) last night, I'm still getting used to in-ears. I always seem to end up with one in one out so I can hear my amp and the drummer, I just don't feel as comfortable locking in with the drummer using just in-ears. Our sound engineer thinks I should get some iems that allow in some ambient noise, my Shure in ears are very isolating. Good gig though.

The last 2 weekends have been good.

We bought in full lighting and sound. Nice size and engaged crowds.And the band was running on all 6 cylinders.

We pulled off a blazing Jeff Beckish version of " Going Down " that killed.

It was great. Real party atmosphere and the crowd loved it. I was wearing a black PVC dress and I imagined I looked extremely cool. However I've just seen a video and I'm grinning like a halfwit and bouncing about like an over excited eejit.
I'm never gonna master 'cool'. I'll just have to settle for 'enthusiastic'.

I think I should excuse myself on the grounds that I'm not playing bass in the vid, just doing BVs! :-) And this is a bass forum after all!

For those that don't know, this latest band I've accidentally ended up in is a rather loose collection of individuals. I do half the set on bass and the other half on BVs. I swap round with another bass player

20 song set in local pub, which had a concurrent party going on but nobody seemed to mind - in fact one of their toddlers got up and danced by the monitors which made us all grin First time with a dep drummer who was excellent - funny thing was I've seen his band before who are tight as a gnat's, and he's been playing with his bassist for over 20 years - so they are telepathic, and maybe share a raised eyebrow to communicate. Whereas I must have looked like I was in a gurning contest with all the unsubtle signals! Worked very well though.

Also delighted that my soldering job on the 79 p bass was up to scratch, new pickups were mighty. Bit of fart on E string, with the master on the Tec Amp Puma at max, but playing nearer the neck and not over the pups cured that. And we were given delicious buffet food and beer afterwards, so happy bunnies all round.

First outing for 10-piece function band - birthday party for the male singer's brother. PA was hired in, and the chaps set FOH and monitor levels quickly and without fuss.

A lot of the numbers were segued together in sets of 3, and they all worked very well. I was most amused when we moved from 'I Gotta Feeling' into 'Pretty Woman' (Big O variety), and heard a male punter shout 'yay! Some things never change...

We played a gig in what can only be described as a micro-venue - maybe 15ft wide and 60ft long...that was it! Tiny rural venue and tbh I feared the worst but I was pleasantly surprised as some of the locals had seen us at another venue and pestered the landlord to get us in there. We also had the added authenticity of a sax player for "Dancing in the Moonlight" which was exceptionally well received.

I had a bit of a howler lyric wise...I'm blaming a bad fall and bang on the bounce snow boarding recently. (In reality it's too little time re-acquanting myself with the material after a few weeks away!)

All in all a top night and I'm looking forward to the return later in the year.

We played at The Reindeer in Banbury on Saturday night, which is a very ancient pub in my hometown with tons of history. Oliver Cromwell stayed at the inn and used it as his war room during the Battle of Edgehill, if that kind of thing interests you. It's also two doors up from my apartment, so I was able to literally carry/wheel my gear which meant that some post gig Hook Nortons were possible - gigs don't get much more local than that.

We did a full two hour set with a very short break, and went down really well. The pub was full, and the lack of a stage meant that we were literally eyeball to eyeball with the crowd, which I always like. No major dramas, other than me missing the first note of one of the songs because I still had my tuner engaged... I was happy with the sound in the room; I was using my Stingray into my TC Electronic 250/15 combo which sounded really tight.

We encored with Walk This Way (first time we've gigged that, we do it more Run DMC than Aerosmith) and Chelsea Dagger which had the whole place dancing and singing along. As we were breaking down we could hear some of the stragglers still chanting the chorus out on the street.

So, a really good night - one of the best gigs we've done, and a massive high yesterday.

not a gig specifically, but I went to an open mic night at church and played Folsom Prison Blues - not the most exciting bass line but the audience loved it. I turned down the tone to match the double bass sound on the original. The guy I play with is all-acoustic and I think he likes the bigger sound even if my meagre talents are not at his level. We start and end at the same time and I keep time so I guess its all good. My six year old wants to come along but its past her bedtime.

We played a regular haunt for us and were a bit surprised when we got there to find only the bar staff there on Saturday, they informed us that the night before had seen a bit of a brawl with a round 20 youngsters kicking off big time and that they suspected that many of the locals would be giving the place a miss for a while.
Having been assured the gig was still a payer and that if it was just for the bar staff they would love it, we set up.
the first people to come in were the wife and the sister in law at 9.15 , and then a few more and by 9.30 we had around 30 turn up , mostly regulars who new we were on.
Any way , we had a party , we were all on fire and played well , had some great craic with those that turned up and everyone went home happy , even the landlord, though he couldn't have covered our cost , he was happy to not have had a completely empty pub!

Had a mixed weekend.....

Friday night gig at a nice big pub venue which we've had some cracking nights at. Usually full of people and everyone up for a singalong and jump around. It was dead as a dodo - played to about 25 people. Annoying cos we played really well too.

Saturday night was a new venue for us so we didn't know what to expect. Great gig, easy load in, plenty of room on the stage and started off half full (maybe 100 people) which then got rammed as the 1400 people came out of a Frankie boyle gig up the road at 11pm and wanted a drink. Standing room only and we had a blinder. Supposed to finish at 12/12.15 and ended up stuck on stage till 12.45 by popular demand.
