I've had heat stroke, it really knocks the stuffing out of you. At least its easy to get over though if you have enough rest.

The heat is a bastard. So is the sweat...everything just goes to hell, you miss notes with the slippery neck, your shirt is constantly stuck to your back, it gets in your eyes...I think at one point Jason Newsted had to start having his basses waterproofed because his profuse sweating kept destroying the electronics.

Maybe he should have bought a floor fan.

Charity gig in the Gala Casino for a local hospice (St Gemmas) in Leeds.
Rolled up at 6.30 ( agreed time) no other band member in sight ( for second gig in succession) so loaded in all PA, Lights and own backline on own.
Eventually others turned up, soundchecked and did 2 low key sets, average age of audience (who were only there for the buffet and raffle) 65, I'd say.
Youngest daughter came up from London with partner, this was first time she's seen the Trio so positive vibes there.
After gig had words with colleagues regarding not only me booking/organising 95% of the gigs, constantly networking/publicising and storing, carrying and setting up PA and lights but being usually first to arrive and last to leave.
It seems the more you do, the least you get appreciated.....however there was an offer to take 2 satellite speakers off me for the future! The worry now is will they remember to bring them to the gigs.....?

The heat has been a bit intense - I was house bassist as per normal on Thursday night at the Roadhouse, and almost everyone wanted me to play for them (it's nice to be wanted), but they still have those old-fashioned non-LED lights so I sweated out an awful lot of moisture. The future Mrs Zero objected to me wiping my forehead on her, for some reason.

Saturday was a barn dance in Nottingham for a young lady's 30th birthday - venue was one of the several rowing clubs along the Trent, and the room was upstairs with a big outside area, so with the heat we thought we might finish up playing a lot of tunes to an empty room. However, the future Mrs Zero was in full-on cat-herding mode, and managed to get a considerable portion of the attendees onto the floor for each dance. The birthday girl had asked us to do "Strip the Willow" [1] and we did, towards the end of the evening - it's one of those dances which really looks good from the stage when they get it right, and get it right they did, which was nice.

Second gig for Soul Patrol at the Highway in Hull.

Used to be a great venue but has had no live music for a while. New Landlords who had the award winning Springhead have decided to put on bands- asked us to play.

Being our second gig we are still a little dodgy here and there ( mostly brass ) but we came, saw and conquered. Three encores later and we were asked to play a residency every week. We said it would be better if we did a soul night once per month- money negotiated and signed and sealed!!

So we now have two regular gigs each month and some function work coming in- all local. A little more than we planned but we`ll see how it goes.

A few musicians in the venue talking to us- one bass player, also named bob said of my Marshall VBA rig "its big" "very big "

I told him I only bought it because it reminded me of an electric fire and that I wasnt very good etc ( humble me )

At the end of the night he was asking me where he could get one - it was the best bass sound he had ever heard- no FOH too!

It was me who got the band together and a pal of mine who was there said that every song had a great bassline ( mostly Stax and Motown ) so he said " I wonder who chose the songs ?" Guess who?

Roll on Thursday- our other residency.

The Crown, LA (Little 'ampton).

Charity get together for a local music project, we had a 30 minute spot among other local bands. Sonically a bit of a struggle using the house Behringer set up (hmm...) and amazingly loud middly monitors to begin with. Played a skiffle-y set with our 'retired' band who get together every couple of months when other projects allow.

Good fun, and lot of folks in attendance, including Silverfoxnik and WalMan with whom (grammar) I had a good old basscentic chinwag after. Thanks for coming down fellas we'll have to do it again.

Went along with WalMan to see Bassninajs gig at The Crown in Littlehampton last night and had a great time! Really good band, some good songs and some very fine musical & funky bass playing!

Look forward to the next one...

My first wedding gig last night...

1) Arranged with groom to be there at 6pm to give us enough time to set up and sound check - Hotel wouldn't let us in the room till 6:45, did sound check playing 1st number "Aint no snshine"
2) Told by hotel droid that we would have to set up between these two fire doors but not to encroach on egress of doors - 5 piece band on 15ft x 10ft patch of carpet
3) Timings are just a joke at weddings
4) Endless trail of drunken wazzacks trying to ask us to play really sh*t songs while we are still playing

These are just a few of the minor irritations we encountered, I can see why we charge a lot more for weddings and parties now

LOL Actually the playing went ok apart from me playing 2 or 3 bars of "how sweet it is" a semitone down cause I was gettin blinded by the DJ's several million candle power lighting rig and because of the floorspace constraints I couldn't stand anywhere near my amp to hear myself.

I'm sure it will get a lot better when I learn how to play lol

Did one of my best jazz sets ever last night at Benson Blakes in Bury St Edmonds. Chris Ingham on piano, probably the best pianist I have ever played with. Shearing's 'Lullaby of Birdland' in 5:4 was a highlight - we all nailed it without a single slip - but the whole set was bl***y marvelous! Second set less so but it was a tough act to follow.

Did our second monthly residency- Soul Night at the Weir in hessle- modern bar near hull.

Our sax player brought his DK 1000 rig- it was the first time our main rig was smaller than our monitors- brilliant rig though- we use mackie 450s for our monitors- unbelievable!!

We came, saw and conquered- another good gig for Soul Patrol- lots of people in -about 80-100 I`d say- usually on a thursday this bar has about 4 people in- may be time for a re-negotiation.

This is our third gig in this band and even though there are the usual fluffs here and there we are certainly getting there - another 5- 6 gigs and we`ll be tight as they come.

Nice to see some young girls enjoying themselves- we received 2 enquiries for function work and they were booked today- one wedding , one private party.

A good venue to play all round.

Another local Pub, went down well and got compliments off the guitarist and drummer how good the sound i'm getting is. damn hot though, i'm wondering if it's worth investing in a fan. it;s good fun though .

Also just back from playing a local pub. We played really well tonight. Me and the drummer were really tight.

I've been taking a fan to gigs for years but not always to cool myself down. Mainly used to stop my fingers sticking to the strings when I'm playing fast.

Anyway it was the second gig with the TI flats on the bass and it was phenomenal. Sounds exactly what I believe a SCPB should. They should be worn in nicely when I transfer them to my new Warmoth '54 that's in the process of being made for me.

Did a gig for Peter Jones (Dragons Den) last night, was his sister in law's 50th!

Really nice guy.....huge!!, must have been 6'7" or 6'8"

He was really complimentary of the band, in particular me.....which I found odd lol, one of the richest men in britain knows how to tell bass players apart haha!
But I'm not complaining, he must see a LOT of function bands....not that we're a 'function' band in the traditional sense of the term.

Anyway, really good evening, the crowd were up for it and were having a good laugh!

I've found these "air circulator" type ones are great 'cos you can point them up at your hands. There's 4 in our band

This your originals band - or a covers off shoot?

He should have offered you some Dragon's Den cash and done a double signing with Hamfat, or whatever they were called.

This was the covers band, it's completely separate from FSOF, no overlapping members other than me!

It wasn't a business do, it was all friends and family, so I refrained from mentioning anything to do with his work etc.....was all just about having a laugh....and he did, he's pretty funny!

Had a gig with [url="http://www.myspace.com/sibillaband"]Sibilla[/url] last night upstairs in a Whitechapel pub. First gig with our new drummer and guitarist - went quite well and the people there seemed to enjoy it. (Punters rarely notice mistakes, do they? There were a few ). Using the house rig, I was playing through a tiny Peavey combo (no DI to PA at this venue), the guitarist through a hefty Marshall stack - oh, well!

We had a photographer there so may post some gig pictures if anyone's interested.

Played a wedding last night. We turned up with PA about a million times too big for the venue. Wedding organiser got feet and metres confused. Doh!

Two stonkers this weekend - Black Bull in Preston city centre last night and the Fox & Lion in Leyland this afternoon - both absolutely brilliant gigs. Good news is we got two likley wedding bookings from last night, one of which is in Galashiels - should be good. Bad news is that two venues have cancelled our gigs this month and another regular -Uncle Tom's Cabin in Blackpool has closed down. A sign of the times.
