smurfitt
Had so much advice that my head is spinning! Please comment on this head and suggest a single cab (4ohm): Hartke HA3500 I want a rig for small to medium sized gigs; capacity of 50 - 150 people. We play Brit pop, light rock and UK chart music (no heavy rock, thrash metal etc). I don't want two cabs but do not want to have to shell out again for an upgrade because I'm not cutting through. Be gentle on me, I am female, blonde, already have decent earplugs and am new to bass gear. Thanks
Bankai
Anyone else thinking a 2x10 or 4x10? I know someone selling a Hartke Transporter 210 (but it's 8 Ohms) Edited March 8, 2010 by Bankai
peted
Whereabouts are you? I've got a Hartke PRO 2200 2x12" 4 Ohm cab which is just sitting around unused that I would let go for £300 http://www.samsontech.com/products/product...8&brandID=
thisnameistaken
If you've got someone to help you load in/out then any quality 410. If you'll be humping it around on your own, look at some of the modern light 212s. I like the Hartke HA3500, I've got one I keep as a backup head (I've got a HA2500 too that I use at home). Plenty of clean power, sounds good with the EQ flat, reliable, no grumbles from me.
Pkomor
*shameless plug* For gigs that size you'd get away with somthing smaller, like the combo for sale in my sig! *shameless plug over*
chris_b
I think a Barefaced Compact is worth a listen for you. Alex does, or did, a 2 week trial period. It's very light (26lbs) and although it's 8 ohm, it's sensitive so it's easily as loud as an ordinary 4 ohm cab would be and, best of all, it's got great tone. smurfitt
Ok guys, give me your opinion on a couple of things I'm quite interested in spending my hard earned dosh on: Either: Schroeder 1212L (angled) and Markbass LM11. Cost £1,050 or Schroeder BMF 1212 and Markbass LM11. Cost £944 Bearing in mind none of my band's instruments go through the PA, will either rig be more than adequate in a backline situation. For such a small cab, will I need to put it on a stand as no doubt one or two of us will be stood quite close in front of it? Cheers for replies. thisnameistaken
I think either rig will be plenty loud and nicely portable. Pick whichever. In terms of where you put it: I've got a 1212L and I just stick it on the floor, but on its side. Because one of the speakers is angled inside the cab, putting the cab on its side means it's angled up like a monitor. Works for me. With the newer design maybe it'd work better standing on something, I don't know. I don't suppose you'd need any specialist "speaker stand" gear really though, just stick it on a table or a crate or whatever. What might be more important (again I don't know because I haven't done it) is that I've heard reports you lose bottom end when you lift a speaker cab off the floor. This might be important with a cab like the Schroeder 1212s, given that they're quite compact and (according to some, I've not noticed) lacking in the deep bass dept. TBH I've always felt if you need bass deeper than these cabs offer then you're going to have to sacrifice pitch definition. In a dub or drum n' bass outfit that's probably important, but anywhere else I doubt it is. Edited March 9, 2010 by thisnameistaken
51m0n
An LMII into any decent reasonably efficient cab will be loud enough. Its a great amp. If you tried it through a far more inefficient cab it would manage, but possibly struggle. Schroeders are LOUD  but do have a rep for lacking a bit of depth (no flames please). Barefaced Compacts are a great cab for a rock orientated sound (no tweeter), well worth a listen (there is one on GAK you can listen to), they get very loud to... There are plenty of lightweight alternatives, there is even a lightweight cabs thread on here somewhere which goes into a lot of detail. Personally I find the Hartke you have to be bit gutless, compared to an LMII....
lemmywinks
I gig a Schroeder 1212r and a LMII, you'll have absolutely no problems with volume! As said, there is an angled speaker so you can stick it on the floor (on it's side) and still hear it. I used a stand a couple of times and found it sapped bass, i use an Auralex Gramma pad now so i get the bass back but no wolf notes/excess floor rumble Also bear in mind you can pick up a LMII for around £400 on here 2nd hand, that coupled with the Schroeder also for sale would give you a killer compact rig for under £700. The Hartke stuff is great, i used Hartke for years and owned 3 diferent rigs (still have a little combo). The LMII has more clout than my old Hartke heads though, FTR i used a HA3000 and a HA5500. There was a couple of the LH500 heads or around £200 on here recently too?
Conan
Be gentle on me, I am female, blonde, already have decent earplugs and am new to bass gear.
I like this! Subtle dig about the earplugs...! The "female" bit is kinda relevant due to the weight issue (although some girls are very strong and some guys are wimps!). Not sure what your hair colour has to do with it though? Although its interesting how the tone of the replies has been influenced by this info.... Bit of the old "girl stops by the side of the road in her short skirt and dozens of male motorists pull up to help" kind of scenario possibly? BTW, no offence intended, I am speaking purely from a social commentary viewpoint!
smurfitt
Being 'blonde' I was referring to the fact that I'm pretty 'dumb' about bass gear as I have just taken up bass and joined an additional band so needed amplification. I've played in a band for 5 yrs as a guitarist so am familar with the equipment; what's hot, what's not but can tell you that I do most of the lugging of gear, not the guys. After all the advice on here and other sites I have just purchased the following: Schroeder BMF 1212 40hm Cab Markbass Little Mark 11 Total cost new with warranty £975 I will be playing my Ibanez ArtB100 & Ibanez 5 string active basses through this neat little rig. What d'you think?
