Hey Stacker, I think the price is fine (fergawdssake a new one is two grand plus and this has sought after chequerboard binding and toaster). From experience I know that Ricks are not widely sought after on BC. Try advertising on RickResource would be my advice and with a few more pics - bet it will be snapped up PDQ. I would like this but all spent out

In answer to a question just posted (and since deleted!), in the world of vintage Ricks certain features are highly sought after, as found in early/mid 70s 4001 models - these include the Grover keys, chequerboard binding and toaster pickups. The horse-shoe bridge pickup is also highly prized in older basses, as replicated on the limited run of Chris Squire 4001's. By the late 70s, these had all been dropped and - bar the vintage tone control - the 4003s of today are little different from the basses of the early 80s onwards. Thus Stacker's 4001 ticks several desirability boxes and thats why I think it will sell if advertised on RickResource.

Thanks for the back-up, Clarky.

Rickresource? Naah. Although your right that it would probably be snapped up dead quick, I'd rather keep the bass than flog it via that forum for they're a bunch of sweetie-wifes, most of them, anyway.

Bass still for sale at £1800.

That was me Clarky, I felt a bit silly after I'd posted because I'd looked at a 2001 Ric 4003. I thought that this was just an older version.

I'm VERY interested in this, just haven't quite got that much money. I will have if someone buys my new fret king.
That's a fair point. I would really love to own this bass. But if I'm spending that kind of money I'm gonna wanna play it first and it's the best part of a day away. I've never played a ric as early as this. Not that I've ever disliked one either but it's big money. But f*** me this is nice :)
FWIW I've had about 9 Ricks and for me the earlier ones are best. Never got on with my 2xCSs or my V63 as well as my '72 and '73 4001 basses and my old '73 4000. The '99 (?) 4003s8 was pretty killer though.

I've had around 14, and the best were the '69 4001, and the V63. I had a '67 4001 for a while, but it was a bit sh*t. The worst one I ever played was a CS, it just felt, played and sounded completely wrong, and miles apart from the V63. Maybe I got unlucky/lucky?

I think the vermilion board on the CS gives it a different sound; I was discussing this tonight with our guitarist, who has played alongside almost every Rick I've ever owned. He feels the same; they seem harder and honkier than the V63. I know some people can't tell the difference but having had a friend play my CS and V63 and say exactly that when they sounded like chalk and cheese to me suggests I may have rather more sensitive ears. Having said that, obviously each instrument will sound somewhat different and I know people who've tried a few CSs before finding the "right" one.
The CS I had was a cracker. Full of oomph and a lot louder than any other Rick Ive had. Am down to two 4001s now and awaiting an FG V63 from Ishibashi.

Still need to shift this one.
My CSs were powerful but I wasn't happy with the tone, they didn't have the detail and openness I prefer.

Lovely bass BTW! If only it had full-widths....
It is a great Rick - and you are getting a V63 now!!!! Donny, you need help....
You reckon I should keep her, now, Alan? :) That said, the missus has gone a bit quiet after the recent V63/Jaco Navigator Jazz furore but it would only be a matter of time until she noticed that there had been no visits from couriers or visits to the Post Offce with a large package!! The other two basses haven't sold, either; maybe if they did I might be able to swing keeping the '73 but for now she's still available.

Needing help? Yeh, and I know what the cure is: staying away from ebay and Ishsibashi and with that to mind I'm shutting down the ebay account. 12 steps, etc, etc,....
