daz
Gorilla TC 110 tube cruncher amp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have just been given a ton of old music kit including 8 old combo amps. Mostly small practice amps, for both guitar and bass. I am selling them all except one half decent Peavey.(the donor is fine with this, even though i told him to put them on ebay himself) But this one (Gorilla TC110 Tube Cruncher, circa 1991) is causing me some problems. Everywhere i go, people seem to think that this combo is either 150 watts (this is written on the rear. I belive it is the power consumption. I see this mistake all the time on amps sold on ebay) or its 110 watts, as per its name. However on looking inside all i find is a single 12inch (Rola) Celestion G12 - 50 speaker (15 ohms) and this is supposed to be only 50 watts. As in 12inch and 50 Watts. Can anyone here help me find out the output Wattage of this old amp please ?
umph
reviews say 150watts, i'm guessing its more like 50 and the 150 will be reference to how much current it pulls Edited March 9, 2010 by umph
Musky
I've no idea about the wattage, but I doubt very much that celestion is original. In fact a quick look at the wikipedia entry for celestion reveals that all production moved to Ipswich in 1975 - yours was made in Thames Ditton. Which might mean the speaker is worth more than the rest of the combo. (I say might because I've no idea what the collectors market is for this model of celestion.) Edit: Forget all that - it actually says Ipswich on your speaker. I still think that's probably not the original speaker though. Marvin
Good grief, the things you see. My first ever amp was a 15watt Gorilla bass amp. It was alright, I think. From what I can remember my mate's still got it. I may ask to see it for old times sake Sorry not much help, but thanks for the trip down memory lane. daz
I just gave it a blast. Man is it loud!! Dunno what the "tube cruncher" pot does but I do know it doubles the volume!! Edited March 10, 2010 by daz
DentDoc41
It's 55 Watts...that's not original speaker but a good one, I got two of those celestions in an ampeg. Original speaker has a cast frame and a giant magnet.
orangepeelneil
Hello, FYI : The Gorilla “Tube crunch” circuit can be interesting, and has a bit of nostalgia attached to it. I remember them in the early 90s being mostly cranked to max...hmm Apparently the Tube crunch can be a nice sounding fuzz circuit and people have made this circuit into a stomp box, etc and doesn’t use clipping diodes instead it overdrives the op-amp.The tube crunch circuit is in most of the Gorilla amps, TC35/TC65/TC110 etc. “The Gorilla amps were solid-state combo amps aimed at the budget market. They were not terribly well-regarded in their day, but they caught the eye of Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age who cranked them for their unique overdrive tone” https://aionfx.com/project/positron-preamp-drive/ http://www.prowessamplifiers.com/schematics/misc/Gorilla_TC35-Gorilla_TC35_Circa_Mid_1980s.html http://dirtboxlayouts.blogspot.com/2020/06/gorilla-tc-35-tube-cruncher-aion.html https://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=98122.0 Thanks, Neil 🙂
BassmanPaul
Sticking my oar in, the amp will never make a decent bass amp with that open back cabinet.
Downunderwonder
Yerp, 110w of bass would flap the best driver to bits. It's a guitar amp.
SlayingGrace
Was given a gift of one of these today, from a man who's been doing sound since the 60's, who used to hang around with my Dad, worked with many of the most famous names in the business, and to clear this up as per what he said.... This is a guitar amp, not a bass amp. I haven't cranked it up yet, because he also sold me a Trace Elliot Series 6 GP12 200w combo, which had to be moved straight to studio. Looks like that's not the original speaker, and I'll share my photos and you can read the info on the back of mine.
