Annoying Twit
How the something can a bass have eight bids, but still be on at £26? I mean, I make a lot of lowball bids, so far none of which have won. But, I'm lowballing something worth £200 with a £100 bid or so. What are people thinking when they lowball a Fender bass in good nick with a bid of £8.27 or so? I've currently got a guitar on and it's had 6 bids since Thursday (excluding one I cancelled) and it's currently at the heady heights of £7. I've been known to lowball something that I see with a really bad/inaccurate/misspelled title, because those parts of a listing can't be edited once an item has bids, and a hard-to-find listing's a good listing if you're a gyppo like me. It's worked a few times too. Jon.
Mr. Foxen
I got a bass for £17 once, so it does happen.
Annoying Twit
Hmmm..... But there are low bids and low bids. I'd guess that a bid of £8.67 on a Fender bass would have a one in 10000 chance of winning, or something like that. Maybe it's different for different things, but some of these bids..... As an example, I bid £79 on this bass which sold for £411! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEDWX:IT That's even worse than usual for me. I'd guess the chance of me winning that would have been less than 1/1000. Surely it's not even worth the cost of wear and tear on the keyboard to put a 99p bid or even £8.67 bid on something. Even if it's got who knows what aftermarket parts on it, it's still cool! I've got no instrument buying budget at the moment, but I'm still continuing with lowball bids, as I think they're unlikely to come up anyhow. And if I do get a £400 instrument for £100, then I'll just have to ride out the extra couple of months budget recovery. The ebay buying equivalent of crying all the way to the bank I think. Here's a typical lowball from me. Apologies for it not being a bass What's this person doing, making increment after increment, and giving up at £60? Not sure I understand that. Oh, and sorry about anonymising the buying ID. Anyone regular on here who wants to know my buying ID, just PM me. Not sure about making it 100% public on a forum who whoever to see though. Mr. Foxen
The auction is won by the person who bid most, first. The first bid prevents the title being edited, and once its on, you can't forget to bid. If you aren't worried about your cash being tied up, bid early. Puts off the lowballers for a start, they pass over it and don't later think 'actually, thats worth a real bid'. People bidding in little increments is a sure sign they don't know how a max bid works. An early full size bid will defeat the last minute increment people as they run out of time trickling bids and getting massively frustrated you are always £1 ahead. Most satisfying to watch someone try that until they run out or seconds.

When I'm putting in a lowball bid, I'm not really too concerned about the bid, because I have very little expectation of winning. Hence I just bung in a bid when I see the instrument in the first place, and then don't have to worry about it. I don't have anything emotional invested in my lowballs. E.g. I'm completely unconcerned that everyone knows what my maximum bid is for the Studio Lord listed above. I quite often revise my active listings and find things I've bid on but have completely forgotten about. And it has happened that I've found something interesting on the ebay, inspected the listing, and found it is me that's winning it. Clarky72
Thanks for the heads up guys, I had no idea about the timing of when you put in the ebay bids, i guess that could explain why I've lost a few things in the dying seconds of an auction and couldn't work out why!! you live and learn eh! Ou7shined
And sometimes even BCers fess up to such jolly japes I used to have a mate who did the same to all his auctions - when he'd run out of folk to ask it he'd try me, then get all sniffy at me for being a cock and declining his request. stevie
The two times I've got real low-price bargains, the sellers have refused to supply. They usually make up some excuse not to sell. You can't win 'em all, I'm afraid.
Bassassin
I've just lowballed a very interesting guitar, just to stop him changing the title if someone tells him what it is! Be cool if I got it for £56.67 - but I won't. J.
