The inglourious bass turd Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 I can play - a bunch of scales and arpeggios, the beginning bits of - paranoid, iron man, seven nation army, satisfaction, that bit from the chain , the beginning of badge - but not one whole song! What's the first whole song you guys learned? Andy Quote
thisnameistaken Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 I think it was "Money" by Pink Floyd. I don't even like Pink Floyd tbh, but the bass part is really easy to hear and has lots of notes in. Quote
Dom in Dorset Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Probably something by Hawkwind Thin Lizzy's Dancing in the moonlight is a good one because it's prety much the same all the way through. Quote
ThomBassmonkey Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 I think it was Dear Chaisey Lain (Bloodhound Gang) or something. Definitely lots of Blink-182 and Offspring in the early days. Quote

"Mom and dad this is Chaisey, Chaisey this is my mom and dad - now show em them titties" Genius - and a great bass intro Quote
OutToPlayJazz Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 I think it would have had to have been "Mystery Song" by Status Quo, which I learned on my double bass as I didn't have an electric bass at the time! Quote
cupples Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 It's got to be Little Green Bag by the George Baker Selection, from Reservoir Dogs, or else the Cure's Lovecats. Love those bass lines! That's what got me started. Andrew Quote
OldGit Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 House of the Rising Sun - the Animals version. Welcome Inglourious BT. Great name Quote
the_skezz Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 First song I learned to play all the way through was the Kinks 'All Day and All of the Night' The first song I actually bothered playing all the way through once I had learned the individual bits to it was Iron Maiden's 'Revelations'. Quote
xgsjx Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 New Years Day by U2 was the first song I learned all the way thru. They was a brilliant band back in the early 80's! Quote
Cat Burrito Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Knockin' On Heaven's Door by Bob Dylan back in the days before Guns N Roses, um, re-imagined it. Quote
JordanRLS Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 My first was Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit... really easy bass part Quote
The inglourious bass turd Posted March 20, 2010 Author Posted March 20, 2010
Knockin' On Heaven's Door by Bob Dylan back in the days before Guns N Roses, um, re-imagined it.
Got to be one of the best songs of all time! Nice one. Quote
tony_m Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Think I managed to crack What's The Frequency Kenneth and Losing My Religion (REM) at about the same time, with One of Us (Joan Osborne) not too far behind. Quote
Musicman69 Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Paranoid by Sabbath... had the start wrong though. Quote
hellothere Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Im not sure which was first cus i learnt all 3 at the same time but all 3 are pretty easy Bombtrack, Know your enemy and Bullet in the head all by Rage Against The Machine. Bombtrack is slightly harder than the other 2 but not much and i used to love playing it. In all RATM tracks its easy to hear the bass in if that is what oyu are struggling with. Quote
Delberthot Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 an all time classic when I first picked up the bass at age 12 - Another One Bites the Dust by Queen not to be confused with the Wierd Al Yankovic track - Another One Rides the Bus Quote
bartelby Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Probably Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls or Seek and Destroy Quote
The inglourious bass turd Posted March 20, 2010 Author Posted March 20, 2010
Probably Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls or Seek and Destroy
All most excellent choices, but looks liked it's going to be radar love - one of my favourite songs, and it's in the book I bought with a play along cd - makes life a lot easier! Bassassin Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Peaches - The Stranglers. Arguably I bought a bass specifically to learn to play Peaches - I had no idea how to tune a bass at the time, so when a more knowledgeable friend showed me what I was doing wrong, I had to re-learn the song... I then went on to learn the entire Rattus Norvegicus album, so that was OK. Jon. Quote
deathpanda Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 After being inspired by the ever-amazing old funk tunes and Jaco Pastorius to pick up the bass, I thought I could attempt them with my already above average guitar skills, and much to my displeasure it turns out bass is on a level of it's own in terms of playing and understanding music. I can't remember the first song I actually played, but I remember my first gig as a bassist I played Fire by Hendrix. Quote
Bloodaxe Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010
I can play - a bunch of scales and arpeggios, the beginning bits of - paranoid, iron man, seven nation army, satisfaction, that bit from the chain , the beginning of badge - but not one whole song! Andy
Can't possibly nail it down to the first song... but 3 albums that were on heavy rotation when I started in 1982 were: Status Quo - Live (1976?) AC/DC - If You Want Blood... Deep Purple - Made In Japan After these I moved on to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers & Stevie Ray Vaughan. Then it's all a bit of a blur tbh. Pete. Quote
