Aah bassko, so much money saved on instructional material...

I've started posting jpegs of my transcriptions on myspace as i don't have a website and couldn't think of a better way to do it for free. I should be adding more every week once I get round to converting all my sibelius files.

There's a few ones up already, www.myspace.com/tomkenrick then click on the photos and there's an album called transcriptions. Enjoy!

What are the .rar files ?! :)[/quote]

someone bitchslap me if I'm wrong, but .rar files need WinRar to open 'em...think of it like a newer version of Winzip, it's just a file compression thingumy!

It's free to download winrar, and it's pretty easy to use/useful too

Legalities are complicated. Music publishers do browse the net and threaten lyrics and chord sites all the time. Simply teaching a basic pattern shouldn't be covered as it comes under tuition, however that doesn't stop Publishers sending nastygram emails (see the JibJab/Guthrie case for how Publishers persue copyright then don't even own).

If you have tabbed out a whole song then Publishers might claim you are on their turf. It's tricky for basslines since there are plenty of valid basslines that don't match what's on the record or what's in the official bass tab book. I definately think an archive of good tabs for popular songs is needed. As you get better at bass you learn how to simplify tabs to make them playable however a beginner can be floored by elaborate looking lines and miss out on some perfectly decent songs.

A recent development is bass demos on YouTube. There are also sites like Show Me How To Play that are trying to make money from video run-throughs of popular songs. How long before there's a legal campaign against amateur bass demo videos?

It's all very cat and mouse. A beginner wants to key a song title into google and learn it. However most legit bass instructionals have to use the tactic of 'here's an interesting pattern you'll hear it on hits such as...'.

I have loads of transcriptions I have done over the years and was thinking of posting some here for people to use as learning materials but I have a question the someone may have some thoughts on.

I understand that a lot of music publishers will frown upon transcriptions like this due to the obvious implications for the potential commercial sale of transcription books. The issue is that most of the stuff I transcribe is probably never going to get anywhere near commercial production (John Patittucci's bassline on Manhattan Transfer's 'Sing Joy Spring', for instance, Ron Carter's lines on Wynton Marsalis' 'Hesitation' or the opening solo on 'Mbanga Kumba' by Richard Bona etc). As this is not a commercial site per se and noone is going to earn any money off this, would I be compromising the site by posting any transcriptions like this?

I have just learned how to convert a Sibelius document into a pdf so am intending to transfer some handwritten transcriptions onto pdfs that can be posted or sent. Seems a constructive thing to do!

You do indeed. Although there are plenty of other extraction programs that'll do it on a mac (like I have). I use Stuffit Expander, because you can expand multiple files.

I've got loads of hand written (some good, some just scribbles) transcriptions that I'd love to share with everyone on here. I'd use it all the time!
