Phaedrus Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Can't comment on the DH item, but I'm currently using a mate's BlowTorch - it's a pretty versatile fuzz. TBH, with the Torch disengaged, I wouldn't rate it - it's barely a light grind, but with it engaged & the gain & blend cranked, it's a big fuzztastic sound. I use it for Starlight by Muse and everyone seems impressed. I'm personally gonna give the El Grande a shot - soundclips are pretty close to what I want from a bass fuzz. deej Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 A DHA is more likely to get you a QOTSA sound. The valves will give you more of a warm, grittier sound. The Blowtorch is more like a synthy, electric fuzz. Its still a good pedal and retains a good powerful low end, but it doesnt sound like what you're after to me. Quote
hellothere Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I bought a blowtorch off someone from here recently. I like it and it does the job i want it too. looking for after seeing what other people say about it it seems to be an aquired taste though. Quote

Blowtorch is definatly the less natural of the two but its an incredible noise. I use a EH Bass Blogger as I simply adore the EH sound and vibe, they may well be the only company that I like every single product from. If I may throw a cuveball?! EH Bass Big Muff? Quote
citizenerased Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 If it's a dirty distortion you want, I wouldn't go for the blowtorch. I also use it for Starlight and Time is Running Out by Muse - it's excellent for these sounds, but as previously said, it's more of an understated synth sound - and I agree that without the "torch" button on, it's not that impressive. fretmeister Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 I use a EHX Metal Muff with a Boss Line Selector to split a bit of clean off. The Metal Muff is a very good pedal for bass, the EQ is really powerful and it can go from light grit to stupid gain. It also has the extra Top Boost to add a bit of drive and treble to cut through for solos if you do that sort of thing. I totally nail the Hysteria tone with the MM, LS2 and a Digitech Bass Synth Wah Quote
basshead56 Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 Of the two options you have listed, would be more inclined to go with the DH. I had a blowtorch for a wee wee bt when they came out, and I just couldn´t get on with it. Tried so many basses and amp combinations and tried every possible combination of adjustments and settings and couldn´t get the sound I was after. It did come close in places, but just not the rel thing. Have you considered the Electro Harmonix range at all? as another person has said on here? I use only EHX stuff now (aside from a Fender PT tuner and Boss PSM 5 (effects loop/poweer supply unit) and they make some amazing pedals-nothing really gets near them in terms of warmth and clarity-unless its got valves in it. And if ts fuzz and distorton you´re after, try the Bass Big Muff-amazing lttle box. Also worth considering is the newer green Muff with Tone Wicker-great sound. Another idea might be to try and track down a Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket or V Twin-expensive and also a unique sound. The only other alternative I would consider might be the Fender Sub-Lime Bass Fuzz. Huge pedal, but bgger sound! Quote
