squiddon
Hello again! I've sorted myself out with a bass now I need an amp. I have a £300 limit. I'm looking for a head unit rather than a combo (renting cabs at practice rooms and borrowing cabs at shows means that's all I need). I'm really not too familiar with what's good in terms of bass amps. I've got a Sound City L120 in the repair shop, well, saying that my mate has had it for over a year now, I think he might have disappeared! What's good in this price range? Trace Elliot, Ashdown, Ampeg (although these seem very expensive)? Help!

However, I'd suggest that you be very, very certain that you don't need a cab. S.P.
throwoff
Relying on rental/borrowed cabs is a bit of a risky game to play. You could end up with a cab that is the wrong impedence or has far too low of a RMS rating for the head you use. It only takes playing a gig where the other bands will not let you use their cab and you can't play. 300 would be best spent second hand. You could pick up a nice Ashdown MAG head and cab, Laney head and cab or something a bit wierder/older Per example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Laney-Bass-Amp-Stack...=item414e3d32a4 Thats a huge amount of amp for a small amount of money, you can often find good deals like that second hand. squiddon
I don't need a cab immediately. I can jam at home on my guitar half stack, and borrow cabs in the meantime. I will be getting a cab in the next couple of months though.

throwoff
Honestly mate, look second hand and cure both issues from the start! Is there a reason you dont want a combo?
Master blaster
ide never let someone use my cab with there head at a gig. And im sure alot of other bassists would say the same. I think youd be beter of just saving up abit more money or get a nice combo, maybe one that tilts back so u can hear yourself at a gig. squiddon
Fair play, I'll go for both. I think I need something a bit meatier than a combo. The rest of the band are quite loud. One guitarist is using a JCM800 and the other a 100W Hiwatt head both in half stacks. The drummer isn't quiet either
throwoff
Yeh half stacks in some ways actually end up easier to move than a big combo I always find, especially in this price range where Watts are cheap but weights are high. Have a hunt around second hand you will find a hell of a half stack for 300 if you time it right, personally If i was in the market I would BIN that laney
The Goatreich
Sharing cabs at gigs is very very common practice. Just make sure your impedence matches the impedence of the cab you're plugging into. Most are a standard 4 or 8 ohm from what I've seen. I'd be very annoyed if we were told by a promoter that it's a shared backline at a gig but the bass player then refuses to let anyone use his cab, assuming the promoter had asked beforehand. Squiddon, you have a Sound City and haven't seen it in a year?!?! Get on that case immediately.
squiddon
Yeah, it's with Vman at spartan audio at the moment. When I get it back I'm thinking of part-ex-ing it for a refurbed 120 from Electric Ladyland, hence why I was asking if they had an email. Not something I could explain very well over the phone. The Goatreich
You could ask Al (Avagddu) if he'd be interested in fixing the one you have if you get it back? He's a wizz with amps, and also plays a Sound City.
squiddon
Tidy! I'll give him a shout if I ever get it back.

squiddon
I've been offered an Ashdown Mag 300H and MAG 410T Deep for £300. Good price? Seems to be what I'm looking for. Or is that Laney the better deal?
Master blaster
ide go ashdown!
lemmywinks
There's an Ashdown MAG 300w head with matching 4x10 cab available from the Bass Merchant, think that includes postage for £300 the pair: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry790533 You'd struggle to better that for your price range.
