I thought it would be a cool idea to have a thread where people post youtube videos, not of themselves, but to give people inspiration or just they think they're interesting.

Perfect, I was wondering if there'd be a thread (or even dedicated forum) for this - there are a lot of amazing players out there and I came across this one last night. wanted to learn the bass part for the stevie wonder song 'do i do' so tried to google the transcript (there's only so much i'm able to do by ear - it's all the fast stuff in the 4th bar of each phrase that gets me).. anyway, couldn't find the notes so thought i'd try YouTube - searched for 'Nathan Watts, Do I Do' and didn't find any footage of the great man himself, but instead, came accross this guy. MarloweDK... german dude - awesome. here's the link of the Do I Do 'playalong':
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyTQzA8_kI8
and here's the link to his 170 other videos!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyTQzA8_kI8
only discovered this yesterday so obviously haven't looked through all of them but i've browsed a few and looks like it's a good mixture of him playing along to tunes with nice bass lines, him recording his own lines, but then most interestingly of all he has some tutorials on there where he speaks, plays, repeats things slowly etc. He uses some cranky backing beats for these but it doesn't matter - his playing sounds great... oh yeh and by the way - he's got some f*cking LOVELY GUITARS!!!...and the quality of the recordings is very good... enjoy.

I also discovered the brilliant MarloweDK while hunting for help with learning slap bass! He's an inspiration. apparently all played through a Pandora too!

Some of my recommendations from him are:

Slapping a rickenbacker http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pF02j2tjoEY

Introduction to my basses http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eZQUkLwwoB0&...feature=related

Nice P Bass slap http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JMSq__vg7Gs

Apologies if his guy is discussed elsewhere, I did a search and only found one thread.

Cheers and enjoy

Graham

Great idea - time we had ourselves a dedicated Youtube thread - I'll throw in this link to my all NEW bass-dedicated channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/mikesbasslounge

I have tons of clips of great bass players I've actually filmed myself - I've made a good start but there are more in the Urb Archives - I have a couple of interviews as well so I'll add them soon.

Enjoy the noodles

Mike

PS as ever my own vids on the link below.

Actually being the pedantic SOB I am MarloweDK is actually Danish. But I guess Denmark is really just northern Germany really isn't it? ;0)

I love his playing and subscribed to his site a while ago. He has his own site www.playbassnow.com which is worth a look.

There are a number of other players on Youtube I recommend you check out; Bassisti, gobassgo1, alexcarr66 and subschool5 spring to mind. They are all phenominal players even if their musical tastes aren't the same as your own.

Most of the focus in this isn't on bass, but I thought I'd post it anyway, because keeping that tight in such a ridiculously difficult song at such a breakneck pace is...mental. Props! I have no idea who the guy is, but...legend.

Skunk Funk

Edit: might as well have some more Brecker Brothers, one of my favourite basslines ever :)

Straphangin'

James Genus :) Mainly seems to play upright these days but great on either.

Don't want to be negative but MarloweDK sounds to my ears like a bigtime Marcus Miller clone. I had a look at the videos he has posted as well as his website. He can groove but flams with the snare quite a lot so his timing isn't that tight. I noticed this more when he was playing along to his own tracks - the records were OK but that may have been the existing bass line. He can slap and has learned some blues licks but IMHO he is OK, no more. There are a number of guys doing very similar things on YouTube, albeit with rather less feel. Perhaps he can teach Jimmy Haslip the turnaround lick to "Havona" though because Jimmy just wasn't getting it
If you want a laugh though... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeJt1cB7AA0
Does that make him a Coltrane soundalike :)

Quality links so far guys - keep them coming... always good to re-visit those amazing Brecker Brothers performances - James Genus just kills that gig - he's a really undersung player - a real monster!

Sorry to be a bore and repost one of my own vids but I just noticed a new feature Youtube has started doing with recently uploaded videos - a WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY option - on the right of the clips just above the amount of views. You'll obviously need your ISP to be providing the full quota of bandwidth :) to fully appreciate this - but I was hoping they might make a 'high quality' version of YT at some point - looks like they were working on it all along - this is one I posted earlier where you can see it:

Sei bass jam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4JhcfWRyAA

But as this is a thread for stuff we've been watching here are a few of my recent faves:

Wooten - looping with his fretless and fretted on a solo spot:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mqnpHNPCqk

Pat Metheny and Richard Bona (and Antonio Sanchez) - play Bright Size Life - with great Bona bass solo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZG8IE14hi8M

The brilliant Japanese pianist Hiromi -with monster Newcastle lad Tony Grey on bass ripping it up in highly melodic style:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjoSRzAlJO4

Hope you dig em

Will watch this at home. Hiromi's stuff is top notch. She can get a bit intense at times but on the whole her compositions are amazing. Does anyone else find her drummer, Martin Valihora (sp?), to just ooze ability and taste? I find his groove playing, chops and fills really catch my attention.

FYI Hiromi's playing a 3 night run at Ronnie Scotts starting Monday. If i wasn't chained to a desk revising, i'd be there like a shot. :/

Also as mentioned above Subschool5 is definitely worth checking out. He's been my substitute bass teacher for a while now. Loads of really varied styles but all good basslines.
