silentbob Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Last week i found myself searching high and low for a pick but could not find one for the life of me, so in a moment of desperation, i nicked the sim card out of an old mobile phone and gave that a blast and it worked a treat, so good infact that now find myself reaching for my vodafone special rather than using a regular pick. Just wondered if anybody else was using anything different from the norm? Quote
Sarah5string Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 10p pieces here Made quite a nice sound actually. Quote
Jerry_B Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) When I first started playing bass and decided I wanted to play using my fingers, I used a tiddlywink - until someone pointed out that I could buy picks. I kid you not! Steve Albini (Big Black, Shellac, etc.) used to use a bit of metal as a pick. Dunno if he still does. Edited April 6, 2010 by Jerry_B Quote
Marvin Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Cut up an organ donor card once to use as a pick. Didn't really work though, lacked rigidity. Quote
Delberthot Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Brian May from Queen uses a sixpence I use more conventional Herco Heavy picks Quote
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I use fingers. Can get messy obtaining them though. Quote

ahpook Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 i've used a whole credit card before... bit of a handful it must be said ! Quote
deathpanda Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 For guitar I use Jazz III's, but they don't really work on bass. I've tried a bunch of other ones, bigger, different shapes etc but only one has really worked for me. They have a weird groove and my thumb just falls right into place, and the angle is perfect for bass strings. Quote
Doddy Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 I've occasionally used various coins, but very rarely. I find them a bit too 'scrathchy' sounding. I'd rather use my thumb in an up/down motion(not in a double thumb/slap way) to simulate a pick,if I don't have one. Although I always have some lying about just in case. Quote
The Bass Doc Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 Tried using a credit card but it was refused. Quote

arsenic Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 I used to cut a pick shape out of the bottom of the old plastic 35mm film canisters. Thick enough to give a heavy sound, but flexible enough to be able to play quite fast..... must try it again, and see if it still feels and sounds as good Quote
