This is my Ken Smith BT Custom VI that I bought from The Bass Centre in Wapping in 1994.

A year later I bought a copy of The Bass Book and got a nice surprise when I saw a photo of it inside.

I've spent thousands of hours playing it over the past 25 years and have enjoyed every minute. It's an amazing bass.

Looks amazing - I can hear it just by looking at it!

My serial number is 1100.

So I'm guessing that means Ken was producing close to 100 basses a year around that time.

Yes possibly, I had a 1991 BT5 before this one but I can't remember the serial... @Mastodon2 has it now

I just got my bass out to check, its build number 940, from 1991.

Seems to fit the pattern of about 100 a year

I know exactly what you mean there. The Smith sound is like nothing else and I expect that six string would sound very much like the particular 5 string we're both familiar with.

I'm getting back into playing after a thumb injury, caused by opening a bottle of rum of all things and that sweet, sweet naturally compressed Smith sound and perfect playability is just sublime.

Over the past few weeks I've not been able to play for more than a few minutes for fear I was regressing my healing progress, so I've been noodling on my Warwick Thumb here and there. The Smith in comparison has such sweet and smooth sound.
