current non export fender japan

In my quest to find a sunburst 62 looking P bass I went into a local independent guitar shop who have overpriced vintage gear and some new stuff

They had a MIJ jazz that fitted the bill but I want a P

Anyway after them telling me how they imported a small amount of non export MIJ basses and that the price and quality was often better and cheaper than new MIA, I asked how much and how quickly they could get a P bass

They then said, oh with exchange rates and all we are not doing it right now, and would not even give a guide price for one

Not that I am overly keen on this route and am interested in knowing if its true, are new MIJ fenders really that good, and who does get these non export items out and up for sale, and for what cost?

MIJ Fenders are recognised as being exceptional quality, but it cant be said that they are better/worse than MIMs or MIAs on the whole. There some exceptional MIMs and some awful US examples.

Try here for some nice MIJ Ps and Js.

I bought my 75 re-issue jazz from John @ Far East guitars a few years back, and I love it to bits. Great quality, great sound and has never let me down. It was technically 2nd hand, but I'm struggling to remember what, if any, cosmetic damage there was – it looked immaculate.

Like yourself lojo I'm currently in the market for a P-bass and will probably go down the Japanese route again. I've tried a few off the shelf US P-basses, and they are nice (better than I was expecting), but I don't think they justify the asking price. I'm also after a 70's model with the thinner neck.

If it's a sunburn 62 p-bass you are after, you could do a lot worse than having a gander at >> this! <<

yes thanks, did see this when it came up, price for condition is too much for me to pay and be happy with, i'm not saying its not worth it, just not to me

very tempted to go for a new MIA, but I will hold out for a while and hope something comes up for a price I feel happy with 2nd hand

Malcom has put some posts around this forum regarding what was happening, the jist of it is that he's been forced from stocking instruments to basically being a middleman. Ask for a guitar and he'll source one for you.

Still one of the best ways to get one of the Jap non export models short of going there yourself.

alder body USA 62 RI and JAP one seem almost the same spec, and only mm in nut & neck sizes of each other

price wise the JAP compares the the american standard P bass at £800

the USA 62 RI seems to be around £1500 in 3TS

Why is the USA 62 RI £700 more expensive than its own standard P, specs are not that different are they

Confused but tempted
