Instrument Cases - Your Options

Recommended Posts

Hmm, im a student (year 11), i bought a bc rich ironbird from Shockwave a while back, excellent bass, great shape, annoying to find a case, he did geve me a hardcase, the original one, but it was wayyy to heavy, and considering i often walk the 20/30 minuits to school, it was a nightmare, i would suggest ritter gig bags, i think their great, their not good for traveling long distances, but they werent designed for that, and, their are many shapes availiable, its just annoying that i could only find like 2 or 3 UK Dealers that sold the shape i wanted (Thunderbird/Ironbird Bass) and it cost me around £50 including postage, which i thinks a bit much for a gig bag, but i had no other option.

Yea, so erm, get a ritter case. their great :) and they have loads of pockets, great if you carry alot of leads (which i have to due to my guitarists forgetting their leads all the time )
If anybody wants a cheap gig bag, i think tribal planet are the way to go. I got one with my musicman off the bay, it has really good padding, really good proetction at the bottom, good sized pockets, really comfortable and wide straps and the fastenings for the straps seem really solid. I'm not sure if it's waterproof or not but i'd assume so. anyway, i thought it would be a 40-50 quid job. Got on the net, 15 quid i think it said! well worth the money, and much better than the 25 quid westfield one i got! (my pound sign isn't working by the way)
+1 there , tribal planet are great cases
my friend has a chunky ibanez accoustic bass, the case compliments it well :)

I've got an 'Gator case for my SG; only been around in the UK. My Fender case has been into Europe & back a few times, and looks like it but the contents were always fine. I had a full-flight case made for my bass in Edinburgh, the insurance insisted on it. The company (I forget the name) say it's guaranteed to 30,000 ft, tho' I've never had to test it. Cost me £247 about 6 years ago, and weighs a ton! :)

I wouldn't mind trying one but cant find a dealer who stocks them, or has a price. They've all got the drum cases :)
The drummer in my band uses these I'll ask him

I'd highly recommend Mono cases. I've been using one since last summer and it barely has a scratch on it despite using it daily & throwing it on all manners of public transport! It's light too which is important as my bass is as heavy as they come, plus can't argue with a 3 yr warranty!

I like the look of these, but I cant find the dimension of the front pocket anywhere. :)

I met a company at Bassday 2009 that make custom 3 bass cases that you just wheel in and take the front off and viola it's a stand as well, can only imagine that thing will be insane with my Overwater's in it but wouldn't mind speaking to them about one.

Anyone know who I mean?

Also I'm selling my Incase dubag I could do ideally with a Harvest Double.

A great inexpensive case for bass: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GLBass/ Rigid but light, zips, storage. Fits a P-bass or a Jazz bass perfectly.

I used a Protection Racket gigbag for a few years before switching over to iGig cases. The one I've got is one of the older
thinner sheepskin lined ones-It's just the same as their excellent drum cases. It gives good protection and is hard wearing.

The iGig blows it away though. :)

Tempted by the iGig... I could carry my Little Mark in it an' all...

The price? Oof. Well there's always going to be the 'it's built to last' argument.

Hmm, I'm very tempted in buying an iGig case..

emailed them asking how much would it cost to ship one to Lithuania..

but seeing, that it costs about 170 pounds in UK, I'm not sure about it:

http://www.mikobass.com/Shop/iGIG/G515.htm

Here, in their page, they quote 179 USD - is this real or not?

I'm after a new gig bag. Had a quick look through this thread but not really found anything I'm looking for (really can't afford $200+ for a gig bag).

I have an old CNB bag that's fallen to pieces on me so I'm after a bag that's as durable as possible, max £60 I'd say. Would quite like one that has nice wide straps; my basses are heavy and I have a bad back. I play an Ibanez BTB406QM and a Musicman Stingray 4 if that affects my choices? My teacher told me to check out Warwick cases; his is starting to fall apart but he's had it for 10 years. That's the kind of thing I'm after. Also looking to invest in a small head (EA Micro or something similar), so would like to be able to fit things like that, scores etc. in the bag too.

Thanks!

Check out these:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/protec_contego_e_bass_case.htm

some folks have rated them high, though, I don't have one.

there should be an 'igig cases' thread, where decent cases are being discussed, check it out..

edit: here it is

I have one of those and it's a great case, offers lots of protection and storage space in different pocket sizes. It's not too bulky and compfortable to carry around.
For the money you can't go wrong!
I bought mine from Thomann too, delivered in 3 days, and since then I haven't used a hard case at all.

I use Mono and it's absolutely awesome. I can't sing their praises enough and I was lucky/cheeky enough to get artist prices on them!

Although this was after I bought my original one, DOH!

Still, I'm hankering over their range of ruck sack style bags. Always carrying extra stuff to gigs and they look the dogs nuts.

Mark over @ Bass Direct stocks them and the iGig bags too. Check him out.

If it's a double bass you need to protect, I don't think you can do better than a Stevenson flight case. They're VERY strong (one fell 25 feet from the back end of a Boeing 747 and the instrument was fine!) and can be custom-built in either GRP or carbon fibre. Their only real downsides are their weight (like most double bass hard cases), and the cost - they're now £2,000 and upwards new.

Happily, you can hire one for just £50 a week from me, as I have three! Contact me through my website at www.meticulous.org.uk if you want to know more. :)

Sorry to dig this up guys, but I'm having a little trouble. I've just bought a G&L 5 string, from this very forum infact, and am looking for a decent gig bag for it. I don't really want a hardcase as I am wanting to be able to commute with it.

It should preferably have a decent amount of padding (25mm+), back straps, a couple of pockets and most importantly, a neck strap/cushion.

I looked at the Ritter which seems great, despite the lack of neck protection, and Fusion bags, which are a tad on the expensive side. I'm leaning towards a good Gator bag from the Commander series, but that's still going to set me back £80. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

The SKB SC-44 may be up your street. Its a hard foam case with shoulder straps. I commute with mine and it works great. The inside is moulded to a generic jazz bass shape. Both my 4-string jazz copy and my 5-string Yamaha TRB fit in it though, so I imagine a 5-string G&L would also fit.

Thanks for the reply mate, I ended up getting an iGig at a good price from this forum, but that's definitely a case to think about in the future.

Really like the look of that, wonder if I could convince them to put a shelf in for my RH450!? Then I could open up the front, patch it up and away!
