I've used DR Sunbeams for years now - excellent. I recently had a different bass that needed tapered stings and I bought a set of Ken Smith nickels. I was really quite impressed by them!

Got a couple of sets a while ago. Sound good to me.

Great price!

Just ordered a set, to try out. I know Thomastik strings are highly regarded so at that price, a no-brainer!

Gauge wise, heavy = lower tension, lighter = higher tension. If you check this link and download the tension chart it will show you the relationships.

If you assume that the tension across the strings on your bass is roughly equal (and I mean roughly) then to get the bottom E from your A string you'd have to loosen the string to the point of floppiness. i.e. the fatter E string has more tension to get the same note. I hope that makes sense and that I've not been too simplistic.

Try Dean Markley Rocco Prestias. NPS Roundcores like the Sunbeams, but much more affordable when you can find them! Thomann generally have them in stock
