absolutpepper Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Hey I may have the opportunity for a trade of my Ampeg for a Lakland Jarry Schaff (Skyline I presume) and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about them. They certainly look interesting but the lipstick pickups seem a bit strange (although Id probably swap them out). How do they compare to the JOs and DJs? Cheers Chris Quote
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 I have the same kent armstrong jazz lipsticks in my highway 1 jazz - great sounding pickups. The wide pickup spacing of the scheff helps gives it a bit more of a danelectro flavour as well. If its a red one I want it! Ed Friedland likes his: http://www.edfriedland.com/equipment/1/61 Quote
obbm Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 They are supposed to be the Swiss Army knife of basses and very rare. I had one for a while, great range of tones from the Lip-stick pick-ups. It would be sacrilege to take them out and you would decimate its value. If you don't like them then please get a different bass to bodge up. The neck width was mid-way between a Jazz and a Precision which was a bit disconcerting. Well worth a look and a try however. If I could find one then I would snap up a 5-string version. Quote
bumnote Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 I have one and its a very underated bass The lipstick pickups are at different positions to a standard jazz as the front pick up is much firther forward than the front jazz and the rear slightly nearer the bridge. Its an active bass 22 fret and a different body shape to the Jo so its like comparing a stingray with a precision. Theres a great range of tones. wider than a jazz becasuse of the pickups and active circuitry, I like mine, had it for 4 or 5 years from new and no intention of selling it. I agree with OBBM you wont improve it by swapping out the pickups, but you will devalue it. If you dont like it as it is you wont like it with jazz pickups Is it a gold one? If it is it will be part of a run of that colour done with Steve barr of the dudepit. Quote
EssentialTension Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Is it the one in Glasgow on eBay at the moment (£599 - no bids)? They seem pretty cool, I wouldnt swap out the pickups now as they sound like they are one of the big plus points of the bass. Yeah, its Shoreline Gold. Edited April 13, 2010 by absolutpepper Quote

While I love my Ampeg I do fancy the Lakland and think its a pretty reasonable swapsy. Quote

However, if you get to see it up close and decide against it, could you give me a report on it? EDIT: In fact, just give us all a report on it anyway. Edited April 13, 2010 by EssentialTension Quote

faceman Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 A live performance of Jerry with the bass - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gxfm6PeS6Y Seems to have a slightly Danelectro growl to it but much more solid. Is this a Doors knock off band or the remaining members?! Quote
