baz Posted April 13, 2010 Share Posted April 13, 2010 I’m looking for my first bass rig, as I have joined a heavy metal band (which I’ve never been in a band) and know little about bass as I used to play a guitar just at home, I have been vigorously searching the net for information, I was thinking head and cab as I can upgrade later, cab wise I was thinking a 4x10 and a 1x15? I have about £650-£700 to spend, but struggling with make as I have heard Behringer-quality not so good, Ashdown not as loud as expected even the 575watt head, Laney also mixed reviews! So confusing! Where are you based?[/quote] I'm based in Ipswich. looking at the hartke 3500 for sale that Tombboy suggested in his post, looked at the specs, it has a valve pre amp and seen these need changing every so often, suppose its a chance you take buying second hand and not knowing much about the internal workings. Personally I'd be looking for a single cab solution and would want to spend about £300 - £350 on a good 4x10 or 2x12, and between £350 and £400 on a head. I'd also avoid Ashdown. The Carvin 4x10 that's for sale on the forum is a great buy at £120 - [url="http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=83341&hl=carvin"]http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...1&hl=carvin[/url] - That would leave you with a nice wedge to buy a good head (Mark Bass, Ampeg, SWR - whatever tone floats your boat) and consider upgrading the cab in the future. They are very loud, very light, IMO have great tone and also offer very good resale value if you decide you want something else further down the line (and no doubt you will, buying new gear becomes infectious!). I have a Markbass LMK and bought a compact to go under my Ashdown ABM410 but now im not sure whether I actually need the 4x10 anymore... the LMK and Compact pack a huge punch and together weigh just over 15 kg!
