pete.young
Does anyone know what bass effects Chris Wolstenholme uses on the 3rd verse of City Of Delusion? I'm guessing some kind of envelope filter plus expression pedal/wah, but I haven't really got any idea.
matt_citizenbass
its weird cause for the first half it rolls of the bass and adds treble and the second half it rolls on more fuzz/squelchyness
Magical_Max
M'kay not very easy to explain but heres what I think. Combination of things, must be some sort of Low Pass Filter in there through-out with what sounds like a step phaser held at a certain frequency. Then halfway through step phaser is shifted to another frequency at which point distortion is added and then phaser is set free to phase at which point lots more distortion is added and verse comes to an end. Make sense?! Or maybe its done on a Deep Impact or one of the FM4's I think he uses. Haven't used either so can't comment.
Kev
i dont think a phaser is involved im not even sure if chris has a phaser
bnt
It sounds like something you can do on a synth - I think he's using the pedal to open up a low-pass filter slowly. With extra resonance, so it goes a bit OTT when wide open. Maybe a bit of LFO on the filter too. I don't know exactly what FX Chris uses, but I don't think it's analog FX. Kev
id say his fm-4 and deep impact were largly involved, with some kiind of expression pedal controlling a filter, and the animato or the muff adding the fuzz
Toasted
It's clearly a studio effect.
pete.young
I wondered about the Deep Impact. I also wondered about the RTK factor (Roadies Twiddling Knobs) ! So what I should probably have asked is, how can I get something that would sound a little bit like this without spending an arm and a leg? Muse_Cubed
When played live it seems to be a highly constricted wah (so it sounds almost pitchshifted) and then it comes down to the low whirring sound. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Morgan's knob twiddling.
dave_says
Yeah knowing Chris it probably isn't even a bass on the album playing that part.
