...not a Stingray, already got a 4 and the jury is forever out on it. I like em, but...

so what else? never tried either sanberg or lakland, but have a hunch they're akin to the compressed Ray sound?

Not sure about which maker, as there as so many factors, but make sure you hear the B string.
This makes or breaks the bass, IMV,

I would only buy a stock bass from a big standard name on the High St after trying it out.
Wouldn't be buying blind, I am afraid..or deaf, in this case :)

If I had to offer a name to look into.. Lakland 5502.

It can do if you dial it in, but it doesn't seem as trebly as the Ray 4 to my ears. The bass EQ really adds some decent beef too

I think you might like the h s like me, you have the option of the more old school single coils as well as the big fat h tone.

Yamaha TRB5 gets my vote. Has a naturally more open and rounder sound than the SR5 but you can dial in some bite when you need it with the two pups and 3 band eq. Great bass (as is the SR5)

+1 Warwick thumb 5 string bolt on, the best low b in the buissness!!

The b is defintely the issue you need to be happy with. I tried a Warwick and their b was not for me. But, as you know, it's different tastes. Their 5 string neck proved hard work.

The Ray and Lakland necks are a breeze to play.

55-02, beautiful to play and very versatile, the MM pick up is split-able into either a Humbucker or either of the singles so there is a wide range of tones.

Infact...buy mine :)
