String winders

I believe there are various gizmos that can speed up winding strings when changing them, although I don't think I've seen one that is designed for a bass (then again I haven't looked that hard). Are they worth bothering with? If so, any particular recommendations?

If you change strings alot then yes!
Especially useful on double bass.
I made one out of scrap wood (!) then found a production model about a month later.. I'll try to find the brand.

They just speed up the turning of the tuning peg really - whereas normally the winding of a string onto it might take 2 minutes, you can literally do it in 10 seconds. I believe there are bass-specific versions on the market now too (ie ones which facilitate having larger tuning pegs)

I used to have one that had a 6mm shaft on it so you could attach it to a drill. Extremely useful for quick string changes on the fly in between songs when I was tech-ing. Bass ones are just as useful as guitar ones, but a lot harder to find.

You should only be winding your strings around 3 times max anyway, so what are you going to pack into the 40 secs you save?

String changing under pressure during a 3 minute song when the guitarist wants his prize axe back makes 40 seconds saved a very important thing, and helps stop you getting fired.

I've never bothered. I can see them being useful for mandolins but for a 4 string bass it's hardly a major pain re-stringing. The drill looking one looks pretty hardcore!

I have one of those! I pop it on the end of an electric screw driver - because changing the strings on my 7 string Bass can be a bit boring without!!!
