jim_at
I use a USA Precision with S1 switching. Unfortunately the pot has fallen off so I can't actually use this feature. But is it actually worth it? What does it do and what tone does it create? At the moment I believe the switch is 'off', so is that just passive normal P Bass tone? Thanks! jim. basshead56
it´s basically a series/paralell switch. On a P Bass, once activated, it makes it sound more like a Jazzbass. The opposite is true for the Jazz. Simples Oh, and it hasn´t anything to do with active circuits so, yeah, if it´s off, you have a passive P Bass tone. On, you have a passive Jazz(ish) tone. Here´s a link: http://www.fender.com/features/s1/ Hope that helps, Colin Edited April 20, 2010 by basshead56
jim_at
Simple. Thanks! Not really sure why you'd ever need it tbh! Edited April 20, 2010 by jim_at
jim_at
Actually, on the subject, if anyone knows a site I can get replacement tone and S1 / volume switching pots, I'd be very grateful. They don't have to be the originals, I quite fancy pimping it with some nicer pots anyway

Low End Bee
My S1 pot is in the junk drawer. Couldn't see any point to it on a Precision.
Cat Burrito
Mine's coming off my 2006 P-bass this week. I've heard great things about what it did to the tone of a Jazz but on a P-bass the tonal switch is a bit lacklustre. That ebay link is £18, you can have mine for a tenner if you really want (assuming it's UK postage? - it may not be off until the weekend as I'm waiting on parts) but if you are hoping for new tones to be unlocked at your fingertips, I think you'll be disappointed. Lfalex v1.1
It does do a bit on a Jazz. It makes it into a meatier-sounding jazz. Not (as some would have you believe) a Precision-a-like. Can't see the point on a P-bass, though!
KevB
Agree, I have an S1 jazz and it doesn't really sound like a P with the switch on but it's definitely a different sound. I leave it on most of the time in fact and quite like the slightly ballsier tone.
Deep Thought
Utter waste of time on a Precision-I had it on my '07 P and all it did was change the sound from full and punchy to thin and weedy. It came off at the earliest opportunity. Edited April 20, 2010 by Deep Thought
