Hi All

Just getting back into playing bass after a long layoff, it seems to be taking me ages to get my fingers working again....

Dug out my old early 90s Status Series 1s and a couple of late 80s Japanese Fenders and dusted them off, one of the necks on the Fenders seems pretty twisted but the Statii came out of the bags still in tune and ready to go (apart from a battery leak in one). I've an old Hartke rig in my spare room but I can't get to it for all the junk so I'm not sure if it still works.... probably 12 years since I last fired it up.

Have been lurking on this forum for a few weeks now, seems like a cool bunch of people hanging out here. Some great posts on here that have got me listening to different artists / songs and it's proving to be a great way to stretch my ears. It's nice to just learn basslines for fun without the pressure (and the politics) of being in a band at the moment, but maybe I'll get the urge to annoy the public with my playing sometime.

I used to play fingerstyle only but I'm starting to learn slap style (a Status owner who can't slap and has no Level 42 albums - sacrilege!) and also with a pick after watching a Bobby Vega clip on youtube. And I really should learn some music theory too while I'm at it.

With youtube, online bass lessons and downloadable bass tabs for most tunes it's a lot quicker to get things under your fingers these days, so really looking forward to getting stuck in.

Cheers!

Rich

Hi-di-Ho Fat Rich and welcome :)

From the tenor of your post (Jap fenders, Status, leaky batteries, Hartke rig trapped in the spare room, desire to broaden your horizons) it sounds like you're one of us already.

Enjoy the forum!

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

Don't concern yourself too much with dieting - we already have a Rich on here.
Got to start losing weight soon, if I get much fatter I'll need special long straps and to evolve chimp arms so I can reach my bass.

Welcome!

When we go on holiday, the current mrs discreet has to lose weight so she can get into her bikini.

I have to lose weight so I can get into the plane.

Is it possible to play a status without slapping - wow I never realised :)
That's what I thought when I picked up the first one, but I was attracted by the carbon fibre weave on the neck, no trussrod, and the super glossy sunburst finish.

As soon as I played it I loved the neck, low action and the hi fi sound (although it can be a bit too bright with fresh strings it can be tamed with some EQ).

Up till then I'd wanted a Warwick Streamer but ended up with a bass on the other end of the tonal spectrum!
