stonecoldbass
Hey folks, Been playing this tune at a few jazz jams lately and really dig the vibe that bob james gives it but decided to go for the D'angelo version. I had a bash at recording the bass and firing the meoldy on top and can say it's a good way to really get into a song and understand how the melody fits with the chords as well as giving you a good basis for improvising on. Anyhoo, let me know what you think! Tech talk: Bassline was played on my Iceni Zoot Funkmeister classic J 5 string Melody was played on my Lakland Darryl Jones 5 String. Both signals were split and I recorded on direct from my Avalon U5 and I mic'd up my Aguilar DB750 and Epifani UL410. I recorded into garageband for quickness with loops etc and did some very light tweaking. Both takes are unedited. Cheers! lowdown
Hi Craig, Basses sound great, I have a Avalon and love it to bits. On the song side [ good choice] Why dont you add some light chords/synth pads and a bit of auxilary percussion, building as you go along. That way it would not sound relentless, it would be a way of holding attention. Sorry not trying to be critical, just a bit of input. Good one Garry Edited April 22, 2010 by lowdown
stonecoldbass
Hi Garry Thanks for taking the time to listen and posting some feedback! Yeah I think I will add more stuff to it, maybe break out the old g****r for some chords and change up the drums a bit. Like i say, it was just a wee two hour experiment. I love my Avalon too...it's hard to define what it is exactly, but everytime I use it to record bass it just sounds great. I'm gonna attempt to put a solo on it too....! cheers craig [quote name='lowdown' post='814685' date='Apr 22 2010, 09:40 AM']Hi Craig, Basses sound great, I have a Avalon and love it to bits. Good stuff. Garry
