Mikey D Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) A tribute to the F***ing Man! I can't express how much I enjoying watching, listening, trying to understand how he does it all on double bass....here is a playlist I made of I think all of his vids on youtube. Please check him out. If you know about him already, have another watch...it'll be worth it. It would appear you can't embed playlists on here...so you'll have to take the effort to click this: Lots of NHOP Edited November 15, 2007 by Mikey D Quote
Alun Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Thanks Mikey, I look forward to trawling through these - I love NHOP's playing. Cheers, Alun Quote
BigBeatNut Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 That version of Caravan is just stunning ... alll of it, not just the bass. If I really concentrate on the closing Oscar Peterson solo, I can just make out the chord progression of the original song ... I can't imagine how his mind works. Has to be said it's so far distant from my current upright skills that it'll be some time before before I delve into this stuff again. Quote
BigBeatNut Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 Totally unrelated to NHOP, but here's another version of Caravan I really enjoy by Brian Bromberg on upright. paul, the Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Flicking through the tele channels yesterday I stumbled upon The Kenny Drew Trio. Wow. Looked online to find out who the bassist was, saw the acronym and remembered seeing it on BC. I taped a later showing and have watched it four times since. Brilliant player. Quote
Hamster Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 The album Chops that he did with Joe Pass is still one of my faves Hamster Quote
Mikey D Posted January 27, 2008 Author Posted January 27, 2008 If that Kenny Drew one is live at the Brewhouse, it is excellent. I recently started on the mammoth task of transcribing NHOP...I think I may just try to play them on electric, much easier than on upright! Quote
Gwilym Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 chaps, slightly off topic, but I've an NHOP cd called Duets which is him and Mulgrew Miller playing the Duke Ellington composed bass/piano duets. It was a promo for Bang & Olufsen and released on through B&A, which I bought at their jazz cafe gig in London a few years ago. Anyway, I was just googling to find out a bit more about it and found this listing on ebay. There's some absolutely beautiful music on there, and it's going cheap too... Quote
Mikey D Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 oooh cheers. Nobody bid against me yeah! Quote
Mikey D Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 OK..who is OP48 who outbid me!? I think I'll let it go...I can't afford to get in a mini bidding war at this point. Quote
