How times change

Me in a ' group ' in 1965, and now in a ' band ', or maybe a rabble in 2010. Still the same Framus star bass.

Oh What memories, what memories. Nice one.

I have a picture of my then band in 1964 plus some more recent ones on my mySpace page.

Sadly though I no longer have my short-scale Framus Star bass. £45 new I remember from Potters Music Shop in Aldershot. Selling it in 1967 was a serious error of judgement.

My Dad gave me mine for my 13th Birthday. Any idea what they're worth now ?

There doesn't seem to be a going rate. There have been several of the long-scale (Bill Wyman) versions on Ebay of late asking for silly money and they are still for sale.

I started off with one of these, £22 10s second hand from Maurice Placquet in Acton. It was a great bass for a beginner with its short scale and very thin neck but mine was poorly made. I look after my gear but bits started to fall off almost from the beginning. A machine head broke on a gig, the electrics failed and I had to wire the pickups directly to the jack socket. After 4 years and several summer jobs I replaced it with a Gibson EB0 (not a good choice) and then a Precision which I've still got.

That`s amazing that you can keep a bass for 45 years. I usually get rid of em after 45 days! I like the pic from 65. How I wish that our drummer used a kit that size.

Looking at you reminds me that there are photos of me lying around somewhere, just like that, same age group too. We could have swapped bands and still fit in.

I still have my bass from that era as well. Same shape, but with VOX on the tailplate. Short scale and very quick.

Here's my pic of The Elite Clique from 1964.

Mine is still in really good condition, apart from some crazing to the varnish. Re-wired the pickups and changed the tuning keys at some stage.

We were called the ' fourteens' ( yuk ! ) and made a demo at the BBC in 1966, and a friend gave me a copy last year. we did 4 songs - Animals etc.

Used to run our own do's at the local village hall, and played at local colleges and cinemas.

Well playing in the 60's when there weren't many groups around was brilliant. Lot's of free love, mild drugs ( not to be recommended of course ) and nothing mattered. Play, get home at 3 am, in a beaten-up transit, and school the next day.

But maybe that was 'cos I was a bit younger.

Music from then was good, and still listenable and playable now. But there is a lot of good stuff coming out now. More difficult to play, but maybe that's 'cos I'm a bit older.

Where's Geoff Byrne? He's got some great pics and recordings of his band The Corvettes from the '60s. Fascinating stuff.

They can go for silly money, they are more desirable in Germany than the rest of Europe to be honest.

There is a site that specialises in them (and a few other old marques) in Germany but they have English ad's

That's a brilliant pic. I must say you do look a bit like my cousin in the older pic. I've seen a few old photos on forums of people in bands taken in the 60s and 70s. I can't even imagine being able to remember that far back. You've neglected to tell us which one you are in the newer photo though?

Really nice old pics there. I wish i had some of me at that age. Very few and far between. Its brilliant you still have the old bass. Whats going to be difficult is wondering who to pass it on to when you pop your clogs. If it were mine I'd hate to think of it going to some family member who didnt care about it and flogged it as soon as they could.

Our 2 boys both play, so hopefully they will look after it.

My Dad died when he was 73, but was still playing his double bass in a band ( not on that day obviously ). He used to take the double bass strapped on the top of his Mk 1 Lotus Cortina.
