Ajrt Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Been listening to 'Them Bones' by Alice in Chains -in 7/8. Also, i think Soundgarden use a weird time signature in 'Black Hole Sun'. Quote
Thunderthumbs Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Genesis "Turn It On Again" - 13/8 if my memory serves me right Quote

Could be wrong though. Quote
deathpanda Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Used to find the 7/8 part in this pretty hard, but it becomes easy when you start feeling it instead of thinking about it. Quote
deksawyer Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Mountains - Biffy Clyro. Great to play with a mix of time signatures. D. Quote

(I think they did eventually change it to 4/4 before bining it alltogether) Edited April 25, 2010 by witterth Quote
OutToPlayJazz Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Many moons ago I played double bass for the premiere of a Colin Touchin piece which alternated between a bar of 13/8 and a bar of 5/8 all the way through. I recently did a week of the musical, "Chess" and that one changes all the time. One particular part cycles through 5/8, 3/8, 7/8 & 6/8, changing every bar. Keeps you on your toes! One of the most interesting ones is "America" from West Side Story. It's marked at the beginning of the piece 6/8:3/4, meaning that the whole piece consists of one bar of 6/8 followed by one bar of 3/4 over and over again. Quote
leftybassman392 Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 'Seventh Heaven' by The Fellowship (aka Guthrie Govan and friends) slides regularly between 7:8 and 4:4 at a very decent lick. Not the hardest here but up there I'd say. Quote

BottomEndian Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Melvins. Pretty much all of their stuff is in or passes through weird time signatures. Usually takes the form of missed or added beats. Love it all. Some examples (all from their most recent album): Quote

In the grand scheme of things, most of Meshuggah's stuff is in 4/4 (just listen to the drums and vocals). It's just that the riff lengths aren't whole number of beats, so you get those lovely polyrhythmic loops. From the horse's mouth (via Wikipedia):
[Mårten] Hagström notes about the polyrhythms, "We’ve never really been into the odd time signatures we get accused of using. Everything we do is based around a 4/4 core. It’s just that we arrange parts differently around that center to make it seem like something else is going on."
Quote
