possible to use closed top pickup covers on standard pickups?

I'm finding that I am playing right over the pickups on my jazz which is a tad uncomfortable on the fingers and was wondering if it is possible to replace the standard covers with the closed EMG type ones and if there would be any change in sound if I did so.

Should be fine, as long as the covers aren't magnetic; plastic or wood are both widely used as they don't affect the magnetic field that makes the pickups work.
