peted
My Aphex Bass Xciter pedal went 'pop' last night when I took the output lead out of the front of the amp to plug it into an electric tuner. I was using it as a DI for the PA at the time and thought that by taking out the output lead I wouldn't create any horrible popping noise to go to the PA, but it did. Then found that when I plugged it all back into my amp the pedal was completely silent when switched on. The LED on the pedal still worked and when the effect was switched off I still had signal going through to the amp, but as soon as I switched the effect on it all went silent. Can anyone recommend who I should see to try to get my effects pedal fixed? Would it be the same sort of person as an amp tech, or is it something a bit more specialist? I've taken the guts out of the pedal and can't see any obvious burnt-out components or dry solders.
richrips
i recently had a pedal repaired by Martin Owen. [email protected] Really knows his stuff and a great bloke to deal with too. A common fault with the aphex stuff is the solder joints where the jack sockets are attached directly to the circuit board (shame, as this is just about the only gripe with what are great pedals, never had a problem with my punch factory). If you are handy with a soldering iron, maybe have a quick look for some cracked solder joints before you send it off. Otherwise, Martin is the man! peted
Thanks Rich, I have sent Martin an email explaining the events which lead up to the fault and asked for an quote for diagnosis.
peted
Fault found! Going to call Martin today to settle the bill (very reasonable) and will report back when the pedal is back in my hands.
peted
Pedal arrived today and now works as good as new! Judging by the invoice (I haven't cracked it open yet) he's not just replaced the surface-mounted IC chip but put a proper socket mounting on the board before replacing it - VERY professional service. Thanks for the recommendation Rich, I would also highly recommend Martin Owen.
