dave_bass5
Quite a nice looking bass and im thinking it might be a good, all round back up bass (maybe, maybe not) but i would like to know the nut width. Now, before anyone starts quoting me spec's off Fenders website ive read them, 1.5". But ive also read that this is not the case and its actually a P width. Cheers. Sean
The Duff basses are MIM however, the very similar PJ555 is CIJ and the guitar emporium has them on special offer at the moment. Just a thought. Edited May 5, 2010 by Sean

dave_bass5
Cheers guys. Seems liek the neck will be fine. Sean, thanks for that link. Ive heard about this shop but never bothered looking for it. looking through their stock i think i now prefer the Aerodyne Jazz Bass with pick guard. I have a feeling the Duff bass will be a bit too aggressive sounding.
chriswilliams666
I have an original 80s Jazz Special and the new Duff one and the new one has a totally different shape neck to it. Much closer to a P-Bass. I will measure mine when i get back too, i also have the Aerodyne so can compare that as well.
Cheers guys. chriswilliams666
The Duff bass doesnt have Quarter Pounders. It has a stock Fender pickup in the P-Position and an Seymour Duncan STK-J2B in the Jazz Bridge Position. It's not as aggressive as you may think. The Jazz Pickup has a slightly higher output then normal Jazzers, this makes the volume of the two roughly the same. Still worth considering i reckon! Then its back on the list. And it makes sense to have the jazz pup a bit hotter i guess. Do you know if the MIJ version the same? Its cheaper but there isnt a lot of info on the website posted above. And im not really up on all the Fender models. I love Alnico V pups and would probably put a Fralin P in it at some point. Cheers. chriswilliams666
The Japanese one comes with standard Fender Jap pickups, not the Duncans. If you send me an email to i have some really good hi-res images of the Jap ones. (i will forward them when i'm not on the work computer) These aren't brought into the UK through Fender due to the obvious resemblence to the Duff Bass. I Think the Jap one will be more faithful to my original '85 one. It is very hard to find detailed spec to these but i think i have them somewhere. The Stock Alnico V Pickup is ok. But i have swapped all mine out for '62 Reissue PUPs as these are the pickup Duff actually asked for in his Custom Shop basses. Presumably not used to keep cost/spec down? The newer pickup sounds much rounder and a bit more high-end sparkle.
Ah right, thanks. Then its back on the list. chriswilliams666
Its different to how the subs feel. Mine feels just like a lacquered 62 jazz bass neck. Prime_BASS
I've got the original power jazz bass special model, Without the painted neck, it's stupid fast, and those extra frets make the difference in playing lead bass. I dunno if the duff signature has ghe same number of frets. Plus this has the active pre amp. Quarter pounder in the P and a Duncan designed jazz pick up. It's great if you want to be thumped, not for me though. Love a trade for a ray 34 , but that won't happen haha.

I know there are loads that do but to me its to aggressive. I guess its ideal for rock though. Edited May 6, 2010 by dave_bass5
Sean
Beware the Aerodyne. It's great if you can live with the body shape. That bound edge drives a few people, including me, nuts. The other small issue with the Aerodyne is that fitting many aftermarket bridges including the Badass requires routing and/or shims. On the plus side, it's pretty and has a good bridge as standard. TommyK
Whilst on subject of the Aerodyne, (I quite fancy one) More Basschat induced GAS How easy is it to drop an onboard pre-amp into one? And is it possible without doing any routing for battery etc... Thanks in advance peeps!

Probably not a keeper though as with my Sandberg PM4 and US P Bass it's not getting a look in. Horses for courses I guess but I'd recommend these every day of the week. The necks were modelled on a 62 Jazz Bass, I remember reading. Infact, mine is the Power Jazz Bass Special, the same as Prime_Bass. Hell, I would go as far as saying we need a separate 'porn' thread for these highly underrated basses!

You might be able to get an Aguilar pre in there but I know an East J-retro won't fit. You could use an outboard preamp thoough, the East one is a J-retro in a box with a couple of cool e tra features.
Prime_BASS
Or you trade my Power jazz for the musicman? Lol it's active so has a battery compartment routed and the control cavaity is quite big.
