I finally joined the Dingwall club. ABZ5/3 with the series/parallel toggles. Beautiful bass.

Lots of missing pics from this thread understandable as it's now over a decade old, time for you folks to post some new ones, not that I need any more temptation 🙂

I agree, that Z3 is stunning.

Prices of the Canadian Dingwalls have unfortunately gone through the wall in the last year.

Awesome bass

Thanks, it really is something special.

Of course I'm a bit short on kidneys now......

When I got the Z3 a big chunk of the payment was covered by a trade of an AB1, a Zon Sonus and a Rob Allen Mouse (still regret the last one), but it only took about 10 minutes to decide.

For the ABII fretless I had a Sandberg TM2 fretless to trade so it was a much bigger chunk of change, but that took about 3 notes to decide.

My Dingwall Combustion 5

I had a clear pickguard made, to show off the quilted maple facing.

I also changed the control knobs for Sadowsky style ones - much easier to identify the settings.

It's a shame I'm sellng it - such a cool bass.

Very nice indeed! I'm thinking of getting a tortoiseshell one for mine - where did you get yours from?

A luthier friend of mine made the clear pickguard - using the original plate as a template for the new one.

And, the bass was sold - to Yan_Hurley on this forum.

Its stunning mate and so very good to see you at the show too! It has been SO long and for a very brief moment it didn't twig that it was you - but that's more to do with my poor memory these days!

Sorry who are you again?

My first (and definitely NOT my last!) Dingwall. An NG3-5 with upgraded Hipshot USA tuners, bridge units and Dingwall knobs.

This bass has effectively changed my life. I've never dug 5 strings until now and it's made my poor Status, Fender & Music Man basses redundant.

Very nice! Where do you source the control knobs? I had a look at the Dingwall site, but with shipping, taxes and duties it worked out at about £20 a knob...

Yes indeed - all the bits came from Bass Direct.

I had a second-hand 2-pickup Combustion over a decade ago, and although I loved how it played, I could never get it to sound the way I liked, despite pickup upgrades etc. I bought this 5/3 new a couple of months ago, and it's a very different animal. I upgraded the FD-3N pickups to a set of Super Fatty II's, which gave a subtle lift in the mids and overall warmth of tone, and my other basses (Lakland, Bogart, Status) don't seem to get a look-in now.

After going to hear Sheldon Dingwall speak at guitarguitar in Epsom a couple of weeks ago I'm considering a Canadian build, but they're well beyond my budget for now. There's a very nice AB1 on eBay at the moment though...
