Strange rant that man, the guy is getting into bass and sure the info is out there but it's always nice to discuss things to make sure you understand all the little technicalities.

Keep the rants to yourself please or take it into offtopic - but not on here where there is clearly someone young wanting to start up and who doesnt have the benefit of lots of folks around that can help clearly its a big decision too.

Also remember that £250 is a lot of money to some people and making sure they do the right thing is a big issue.

I remember when i first started i had 80 quid from my birthday to spend to get everything, managed it in the form of a no name PJ ibby look-a-like from ebay for 60 quid with amp and everything else, back then that was a lot of money to me (still is tbh )

I've heard that Yamaha are good to trust, and stay in tune and are well built etc.

The RBX 374 is a good bass.

In fairness that VMJ is a pretty good buy too.

You are correct there is a huge amount of choice.

And as far as bass amplification is concerned I recommend ashdown EB amps which are loud and sound great and most importantly.............are cheap (especially if you buy secondhand - about £100).

I saw Clauster play through an EB amp and it sounded incredible, made me feel a bit silly with an SVT and an 8X10

And those SX Ursa guitars look cool.
I've been looking at these ProBass things aswell. Paul H bought one and it sounded good as far as I could tell.

Any thoughts on their Geddy Lee model?

Thats cool, but i don't think its really worth the hassel and the $80 shipping for a first bass and I dont see it on their site anymore.

Still leaning towards the RBX374 or the VMJ.

Yup, proud owner of an Aero2 which so far I am very happy with. The intonation seems slightly out above the 15th/16th frets. I never go that high up anyway but I will mention it to the ProBass guy. Other than that the build quality is good. The only thing I have noticed is a couple of scratchplate screws in at a funny angle. I have set the action up very low and a bit buzzy as I like it and I have to say it's possibly one of the most playable basses I have ever owned.

I will do some proper sound samples at some point.

I imagine the Geddy is very SX like and looks like a bargain to me.

EDIT: Tried the intonation again and got it pretty spot on.

And Geddy Lee is like.. my hero. I've liked Rush for as long as I can remember.

I have a Geddy Lee and the vintage modified squier does a really good imitation. All you need to do is paint the body with some black gloss auto paint and get a white scratchplate and there you go it's a geddy!

The thing about choosing a bass for the first time is to get one that looks good..... who cares about the sound!!

I get scared when I try to modify something that's already good because Im scared to wreck it! Often complicated too..

Is it easy to replace a scratchplate?

Alot of modding is very easy, to change the PG your only problem would be finding the correct one. I'm not 100% but im sure different fenders have different shaped PG's ie made in mexico and made in japan are not the exact same shape.

When i built my jazz bass i had 3 different PG's two pearloid and one white and i had to shave a bit off one of the pearloid ones to make it fit with the neck. I'm sure someone else can explain this better.
