Just stumbled across this thread! Heres my (well, my late Dad's) mostly working Pro II Black 'n' Gold.

It needs some attention and a bit of work. Hopefully get it playing by my sisters wedding.

Sorry to be so flipant. . . .

Nice bass, I have one that is identical but my first glance had me marveling
at your Photoshop skills - a mate has some wallpaper like that and I was
trying to see how you had got the shot and then realised it is on a bed?

Doh!

Irl get me coat! :D

Cheers. :)

Dunno if this is of use to any Pro 2 fans, but just spotted on Ebay an Aria Pro 2 SB Special 2 which looks in good nick. It's like mine (but very definitely not mine!!). I'd buy it but there's not much point in having two the same & I've just purchased an RSB Deluxe. It's probably against forum rules to post a link to the auction, but as these don't come up often thought I'd make people aware! As I type, 1 day of left on auction. Public service broadcast over!!

After being a 'buy a new bass' guy for loads a years, I've now moved into 'vintage gold'. My latest is a players dream! A 1981 Pro SB 900. All original apart from a modified jack socket. May change it, but you know, it's a sure & steadfast addition & kinda looks alright. Here's some pics..... It's getting more gig time than my Fender Jazz or Warwick Corvette, but all have such different qualities. what do you think?

And here's my SB-1000 JT, bought direct from Aria UK around 2004/5 (Oak finish, ash body, maple and mahogany neck, ebony fret-board and strung with DR Black Beauties) :

Here is my new baby, a 1981 fretless SB700. Yes, it's the one from this forum. It arrived yesterday, safe and sound from Poland. It's in great shape and sounds fantastic !

Hmmm, beautiful! I was admiring that when it was for sale :)

I've just acquired this Aria Pro II SB Special II:

Thumb rest is obv. not original but generally the bass is in pretty good nick apart from a few cracks in the lacquer.

Can anyone tell me more about this instrument? It was made in Japan and I'm guessing early 80s but catalogues I have seen on-line don't picture this exact version with the 2 matching pickups.

TIA :).

ETA: @FlatEric: looks like the same model as your last 2 pics in post #5.

Fantastic! I had one of these - the exact model and in black too : my first good bass after a P copy. I sold it in the early nineties when I lived in Oxfordshire, and to my shame it was to fund a Marshall guitar amp. One of my worst decisions ever. I bought the bass in Oxford from a little shop in St Clements, which went out of business some time after. That would have been in 1984, and I remember distinctly paying £284 for it. It was a cracking bass - very light, great fast and slim neck, and had an excellent variety of tones. I have been looking for one for ages, but it's quite an obscure model I think, and I don't know that many were made in this format. Very envious.

Thanks :). I hadn't played this for a while (I prefer fretless) but on seeing your post I got it out for a quick blast. I'd forgotten what an absolutely cracking bass it is. The best bit is I got it for a song because the bridge pup doesn't work. Most Aria Pro IIs of the era have potted pickups apparently so are virtually non-repairable but these aren't so all I need to do is get it re-wound.

Here are some nicer pictures of my gorgeous 1981 factory fretless SB-900. The single most playable and best sounding bass that I've ever played ...

:o
oh my good god, that is stunning
For my money, the SBs are some of the best looking basses ever made. They make a Fender look like a twig.
I just missed out on an eBay-bargain original SB-1000 a couple of months ago, I was absolutely gutted. I still dream of getting my paws on an old SBR-150 like police squad's.

My third ever bass was an SB Special II, another one I regret selling (especially as I part-exed it for an Encore Strat... WHY!?!?!?!?!?).

I picked up an SB900 in the late 90's, owned it for a year or so, then chopped it in for a blonde '89 StingRay. About 10 years ago, I found a beaten up SB Special II on eBay. Very shocked when it arrived, as it was packaged up in nothing more secure than some plastic bags & parcel tape! Thankfully, it was still in 1 piece, and played quite well once I'd cleaned it up & set it up again.

Anyone interested in old Aria Pro's should check out: www.matsumoku.org/guitars.html, loads of info including catalogues and a forum.
